2010 World Cup Futures

Here are the futures for the 2010 World Cup next summer and the FIFA rankings quoted, as well as the futures, will not change much until then, barring injuries to major players.

Brazil and Spain are both at +450 odds to win the World Cup and each has the best odds to win the biggest trophy in sports.

Brazil (+450) is stacked with many star players and they are the 2nd ranked team in the world, behind Spain, but they did not draw a good World Cup group, as they are in the dreaded Group of Death. In group play they face Portugal, who made it to the semifinals in the last World Cup, a strong Ivory Coast squad, and North Korea, who is the strongest team from Asia. However, Brazil has a coupe of things going for them, as they have never lost when playing in Africa and they will not be bothered by the hot and humid conditions.

Spain (+450) is the world’s top ranked team and they looked great in World Cup qualifying. They have Francisco Torres and many other world class players on their squad. For many years Spain had disappointed in the bigger tournaments, but with winning the European Championships in 2008 that is in the past. Spain does not play in the strongest World Cup group, as they will face Chile, Honduras, and Switzerland.

England (+550) has been a disappointment in the last few World Cups, but that may change next summer, as they are stacked with such stars as Wayne Rooney, Terry Cole, Steven Gerard, and Frank Lamped. Their World Cup group is not that strong facing USA, Slovenia, and Angola. Goalkeeping is still a concern, but the English has a squad that can go far in South Africa.

Argentina (+900) needed a late push just to qualify for the World Cup, but they are a great squad led by striker Lionel Messy, who is one of the best big-match players in the world. However, they were drawn into a tough group facing Nigeria and Greece, who FIFA currently has ranked in the top 15.

Germany (+1100) may be a good pick, as they are strong led by stars Michael Ballack and Bastian Schweinsteiger and they were drawn into one of the weaker groups. They face Ghana, Serbia, and Australia in group play so they should make it out, especially if they play like they did in qualifying play.

Defending champion Italy (+1200) also was lucky not being drawn into the toughest of groups with Slovakia, Paraguay, and New Zealand, but Italy is not the youngest squad any more and their offense is an issue. However they are still legit on D and they will have Gianluigi Buffon in goal, but can they repeat what they did in 1938, which was to repeat as World Cup champions.

Holland looked very impressive in qualifying for the World Cup and while they have a great offense their defense is very suspect, as they tend to score a bunch of goals, but give up a bunch as well. Holland is in one of the tougher groups with Japan, and up and coming Denmark squad, and Cameroon, which currently the highest ranking team in the world from the African continent.

France (+1400) is one lucky country, as they not only got into the main draw thanks to a non-call on an obvious hand ball, but they also drew the host South Africa in their group instead of one of the top-tier teams. However, getting out of the group will not be a cakewalk since Mexico and Uruguay, who are both solid, are in their group.

Portugal (+2500) had to go to a playoff with Bosnia to qualify for next summer, but they did so without star striker Cristiano Ronaldo and the semifinalists from the last World Cup may be a good dark horse pick. However, they were drawn into the Group of death with Brazil, North Korea, and the Ivory Coast.
