Man sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting TCU kicker

CONROE, Texas -- A 42-year-old man who pleaded guilty to fatally shooting TCU kicker Kasey Davis with a deer rifle last year was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison.

Davis was home for Christmas break, sitting in a parked car at an apartment complex, when police say Jeffrey Clay Lasiter walked up to the driver's window and shot him. The two men did not know each other. Lasiter pleaded guilty Monday before the start of his trial. His attorneys had argued that the divorced, unemployed father of two suffered from a mental illness.

Davis' mother, Judy Cantrell, told the Houston Chronicle she was pleased with the punishment.

"He needed to be put away for life because he is definitely an evil and cruel person," she said in a story posted on the newspaper's website.
