Mattingly gets dicked, Girardi to get offered Yanks managerial job

I have to say I think that's a pretty offbeat way of looking at things.

So, they shouldn't hire who they think is the better candidate because of loyalty to a beloved player from their bad years? Like I sad earlier, I don't see what "sucks" or how Mattingly got "dicked" by not getting this promotion. He admitted in a radio interview on Mike and the Mad Dog that he was never promised this job as Torre's successor ever by George Steinbrenner or anyone in the Yankee organization. Being a lifelong, beloved Yankee doesn't qualify him to be the Yankee skipper. It just doesn't. He has never managed anywhere on any level in his life, and he's supposed to get the biggest managerial job in the baseball world at a time when the franchise is in disarray? Plus, Girardi already has a Manager of the Year Award (with a payroll below $30 million and full of rookies) in his back pocket. I also said earlier that it's been reported in many places that his 8 hour interview with the Yankees brass absolutely FLOORED them and they were so impressed with him that they knew he was there guy. I'm guessing Mattingly's interview wasn't anything close to what plans Girardi layed out and got the Yankee hierarchy to embrace.

Girardi also asked Mattingly to be his bench coach and Mattingly (obviously) declined.

I guess Im just old school man. Also, Mattingly left because it was a slap in the face to him.

Girardi may end up being a hell of a lot better manager than Donnie, all Im saying is it was a slap in the face.

Leave it to the Steinbrenners to keep **** controversial though lol.

I still think its great how they try to go out and buy the best team in baseball and it always backfires on them.

As for Valentine.......if he is that good, why did your Mets let him get away?

He rubbed management the wrong way. I heard this quote about him the other day when someone mentioned the Yankees should look into him. "He'll create more headlines with then he subdues" They were saying that unlike Torre, Valentine would make himself the story. When it comes to baseball it's a no-brainer that Valentine is one of the greatest coaching minds ever. I've never heard a reporter, analyst, or anyone in the game for that manner disagree. Valentine is so smart and so pig-headed that it ruins himself.

He's a surefire HOF'er of a manager and when it's all said and done, for better or worse, will be considered one of the great baseball minds of all time.

I don't like him either and think he's a pompous ass, a guy who knew his team was cheating and did nothing, and makes games unwatchable with all his pitching changes and idiosyncracies, but he's still an all time top tier manager.

no i meant i forgot about the 3rd WS he was swept in. I did remember the 83 win cards but lets be real. The teams prior to 2006 had won 105 and 100 games and the year they were swept by BOS they had 105 wins cuse...they couldn't have been that bad. And the 83 win team had injuries all year long.

I don't HATE Larussa as you put it. My point was, nobody ever talks about him being bad. Dude- the guy had the best team in baseball by far in 1988 and 1990 and was swept in both series. At least Phil Jackson didn't lose when he was handed a superhuman team. So if you are going to say Torre was overrated, then how is LaRussa not overrated? He had the best team in the NL and the AL for 3-4 year runs and only won once with each team. So why does Joe Torre get **** for having a great team and not winning and LaRussa gets accolades? That was all my point was.

He had the better team against the Red Sox? Seriously? Not a chance. No one was beating them after the run they had against the Yanks - ripping off 4 straight and then another 4 against the Cards. LaRussa also won the World Series with an 83 win regular season team. I guess he gets no credit for that, huh?

As for Valentine, he's a mad scientist type who wore out his welcome at the time there. I would take him back right now over stupid, cliche Willie Randolph. Every Met fan worth his salt would take Bobby V over Willie. Its not even a discussion.

Im just peaved that the Yanks **** on one of their all time greats and showed no loyalty. I mean ****, I rank Mattingly up there with the Cal Ripken's and Tony Gwynn's of the world that stuck with their team throughout their whole career and there never was any question about their loyalty.

I think Larussa is a good manager. I think when it comes to baseball he is extremely knowledageble and he has no problems taking risks. At times they work out and he looks great and at times it makes him look bad. I don't watch enough Cardinal games to get a fair assesment on Larussa as a manager.

Can some team please GRAB THERE SACK AND SIGN BOBBY VALENTINE to be there manager. One of the greatest baseball minds ever is stuck over in Japan without an oppurtunity here. If there was a smart team out there he'd be my first selection and not the like of Girardi, Torre and Mattingly. If I were the Yankees I would have looked at Valentine and Ryan as the managers for my team. But saying that I see the direction the Yankees are going in. Yankees are looking to build a team centered around young players like Cano, Cabrera, Chamberlian, Kennedy & Hughes. It's becoming harder and harder to get players in Free Agency and Trade and you know have to build your team with players inside your organization more then ever. With that Girardi is the right choice for them.

Different time, different media, different teams, different ownerships. I'm a diehard Met fan and I'll happily admit that NOBODY could have coached the Yankees over the last 12 years and done the job that Torre did. Like I said as a manager of the game of baseball I feel Torre does a horrendous job and it showed over the last few years without Zimmer by his side. Still there is no coach in the game that could have dealt with the NY media, talent, payroll, owner and clubhouse like Torre did.

I just recall Don Mattingly being a die hard Yank that would have never considered playing for anybody else.

Seeing him in Dodger blue will be quite bizarre to me. At this point in his life though, maybe its a blessing as his kid supposedly has a huge shot of making it to the big dance with Donnie's new team.

Preston Mattingly was chosen in the first round (31st overall) of the June 2006 MLB draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers and is currently rated as a B- prospect.

I hate the Dodgers but I hope they win it all just to spite the Steinbrenner family. **** you George, Hank and whatever the other brothers name is thats running their circus. I take great pleasure in watching these clowns make an attempt to BUY the best team in baseball and get their wankers caught in their zipper.

Umm yea, he managed the Mets, Braves, and Cardinals in some form for a combined 14 years before he managed the Yankees... 5 winning seasons, made the playoffs once with Atlanta in (I think) 1982.

Joe Torre is one of the greatest clubhouse managers but as a tactician in baseball he is not good. I really can't think of any managers that could coach that clubhouse, owner and media market.
