Toledo RB charged in point-shaving scandal

University of Toledo running back Harvey "Scooter" McDougle Jr. has been charged with recruiting football and basketball players in order to shave points and fix games for a Macomb County gambler, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press.

A criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit said the scheme was spearheaded by a man identified only as "Gary."
Allegedly Gary invited players to gamble and eat at Greektown Casino in Detroit. The complaint stated that one player was offered $10,000 to sit out a football game. Other players were given money and food among other gifts.

Even though McDougle told the FBI he received a car, telephone and other gifts from Gary, he insisted it never changed the way he played to affect the outcome of games.

McDougle, 22, was expected to appear in U.S District Court in Detroit on Friday and could not be reached for comment. There was no immediate response from school officials.

It's uncertain how many other athletes were implicated in the scheme because no other players or teams at Toledo were named in the complaint. At this point, it's also unclear if other schools are under investigation.

While there was no indication in the complaint that players threw any games because of the scheme, the document alleges that Gary, McDougle and others bribed Toledo athletes to impact the final score of specific games, so bets could be made on the games with illegal sports bookmakers.

"Once Gary and the players knew the line, they would decide if they could beat the spread," the complaint said. "If they were picked as an underdog by 10 points, they would decide if they could beat the 10 point spread. If they were picked as a favorite by a certain number of points, the players would decide if they would most likely win by that much."

can someone please refresh my memory on something. I remember when Ball St. played Toledo I had a buttload of money on the over. It was 20-17 Ball St. and Toledo was driving to attempt a game tying field goal. I forgot what happened in that game, but I think something fishy happened....
Did that running back drop the ball on a 4th down or something? I keep trying to find the game, but it's very hard to find a complete play by play this long after the end of that game.

The game was televised and we had lots of fun in our in game threads, someone must remember what happened.

People will try to blame this on gambling, but if these kids were given what they're worth to the NCAA then this kind of thing wouldn't happen. Pro athletes might not play as hard, but at least they can't be bought off with fancy cars that they already have.

recovering - the O/U on a Toledo/Ball State game was probably in the mid to high 50's this year since Ball State played no defense whatsoever and Toledo, while they had a better defensive year, isn't exactly known for their defense either. While I don't remember what happened, I'm guessing they were nowhere near the OVER in that game.

Stiffler did always say that Thursday Night MAC games were a bit suspicious sometimes and now we have a bit of an explanation.

u right cusefan, the o/u in that game was 53.5, so I woulda need the game tying FG and a TD from each side, but you kinda just hafta hope. I think I had like 1200 dollars on that game.

I think I remember what happened, but I'm not sure. Toledo was driving for a fg late in the game, and I think the RB dropped a screen pass when he was wide open for the first down. Don't remember exactly though.

That football program is washed up though. It's amazing how much the MAC conference has suffered since Rothlesberger and Gradkowski left.

Miami Ohio, Toledo, and Bowling Green used to actually be good teams. I don't even know who won the MAC championship this year.
