Can I ask when Saban became such a star in coaching, because I missed it personally. He was mediocre at best during his stint at Michigan State, 2 big seasons at LSU, an absolutely albatross of a stint with the Dolphins, and took Alabama straight back in to mediocrity. I'm so lost as to how this guy got such mythical status. I guess if people voted Phil Rizzuto in to the hall of fame in baseball, I can see people think Saban is something special....

i just dont get how schools like alabama and now arkansas can look at how Saban set the dolphins back 5 years, and petrino (actually doing the falcons a favor) not making them better, or worse, and then just think: hey they will do better returning to the college level.

I mean I can understand Saban...previously with LSU, and Petrino put Louisville on the map, but he didnt exactly light it on fire either...

Spurrier I think could have done better IMHO...but the common theme with all 3 coaches is they were thrust into a situation they have little control over. they can recruit QBs in college not in the NFL.

all 3 coaches were stuck with total suckass QBs...imagine if Spurrier had a real QB. just speculating he could still be a suckass pro coach, but we';ll never know for sure because he's not coming back.

I agree, but I guess in this case they had the "itch" or they just wanted more money/stardom.

Plus, let's be honest... You're around college girls day in and day out and if your team is good, they love you....

    .
good point, but Payton was still with the Cowboys I believe.

last year was his first year, and since they did so well and went so far in the playoffs, thats why he's been so popular.

was haslett still with them in 2005? I think so.... could be wrong.

but I didnt expect Payton to turn them around so quickly, then again having Brees come over as a FA and drafting Bush, and getting a healthy McAllister doesnt hurt either. Only thing is I expected them to struggle this year, remains to see how good Payton is as he just signed an extension with the Saints.
