    • Obama's Approval Rating Plummets 15% in a Week

Hmmmm. On January 16, 2008, Obama had an approval rating of 83%, which was during the transition, a time when Obama didn't actually do anything (remember "No comment - there is only one president at a time").

Today, a week later, he is at 68%.

What could account for this sudden plunge in popularity? Could it be that the guy wants to spend a trillion dollars of taxpayer money at a time when we actually need our money just to make ends meet? Call me crazy, but telling people he is going to take their money and use it to paint bridges ain't exactly persuasive stuff.

Maybe he is losing support among the lefties, who might be realizing that The One might be a warmonger, no better than Bush, for bombing innocent dirt farmers in Nowhereistan?

Whatever the reasons, his numbers are falling. From Politico.

The Gallup Poll on Saturday released the first job-approval rating for President Obama, based on interviews during his first three full days in office: 68 percent.

Now that he’s in office, Obama’s approval ratings are starting to normalize, as partisan back-and-forth picks up. Just a week ago, Gallup found an astonishing 83 percent approval of how he has handled his transition, showing he had even won over most Republicans.

The new job-approval figure puts him at the upper end of opening poll numbers for presidents, but doesn’t set a record.

Gallup’s initial job approval ratings were President John F. Kennedy, 72 percent; Dwight Eisenhower, 68 percent; Jimmy Carter, 66 percent; Richard Nixon, 59 percent; Bill Clinton, 58 percent; George W. Bush, 57 percent; and Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, 51 percent.

So JFK he ain't. Eisenhower and Carter are more his speed. As I recall, one of those guys had a real job before he became president, saving Europe and all. The other one was well . . . Jimmy Carter. And we know how that ended.

Have the bloom and the rose begun to part ways?

        • Vatican official accuses Obama of 'arrogance'

ROME (AFP) — A senior Vatican official on Saturday attacked US President Barack Obama for "arrogance" for overturning a ban on state funding for family-planning groups that carry out or facilitate abortions overseas.

It is "the arrogance of someone who believes they are right, in signing a decree which will open the door to abortion and thus to the destruction of human life," Archbishop Rino Fisichella was quoted as saying by the Corriere della Sera daily.

Fisichella is president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, one of a number of so-called pontifical academies which are formed by or under the direction of the Holy See.

"What is important is to know how to listen... without locking oneself into ideological visions with the arrogance of a person who, having the power, thinks they can decide on life and death," he added.

Obama signed the executive order cancelling the eight-year-old restrictions on Friday, the third full day of his presidency.

The so-called "global gag rule" cut off US funding to overseas family planning clinics which provide any abortion services whatsoever, from the operation itself to counselling, referrals or post-abortion services.

"If this is one of the first acts of President Obama, with all due respect, it seems to me that the path towards disappointment will have been very short," Fisichella said.

"I do not believe that those who voted for him took into consideration ethical themes, which were astutely left aside during the election debate. The majority of the American population does not take the same position as the president and his team," he added.

The order won Obama praise from Democratic lawmakers, family planning and women's rights groups but drew angry condemnation from pro-life organisations and Republicans.

More than 250 health and human rights organisations from around the world sent Obama a letter, thanking him for ending a policy "which has contributed to the deaths and injuries of countless women and girls."

            • MUSLIM GROUPS TO OBAMA: ISLAMIC INFILTRATION AT HIGHEST LEVELS

How is the American Muslim community not engaged? How are they different from any other American? Why are their goals different from those of patriotic Americans? Which Muslims would these notorious groups (i.e. CAIR) have head these "roundtables with Muslim leadership for all departments, such as State, Justice, Homeland Security and Health and Human Services" - pious Muslims? Muslims who follow the doctrine outlined in the Quran?

They are going for the jugular. Meanwhile, Islamic Terrorists Forming Cells In America

Muslims Ask Obama for Inclusion, Change - IslamOnline.net - News

WASHINGTON — A coalition of the 12-largest Muslim organizations in the US has issued an open-letter to President-elect Barack Hussein Obama urging him to break away from the long-criticized policies of President George Bush's administration and to engage the American Muslim community.
"We...wish to see you instruct senior officials in your administration to reinstate roundtables with Muslim leadership for all departments, such as State, Justice, Homeland Security and Health and Human Services," said the American Muslim Task Force on Civil Rights and Elections (AMT).

Unveiling the "American Muslims in the American Mainstream," open-letter in a press conference on Monday, December 29, AMT chairman Agha Saeed said the incoming Obama administration needs to take notice of the American Muslim community.

Muslims Ask Obama for Inclusion, Change - IslamOnline.net - News
"Ninety-five percent of Muslims voted on the day of election," he stressed.

"That was the highest voter turnout of any community in America."

But there are only 2 million Muslims in the whole country...

An AMT poll found that 89 percent of Muslims voted for Obama while only two percent voted for Republican candidate John McCain.

Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), affirmed that US Muslims are "capable" and ready to help bring the change Obama has promised during his campaign.

"American Muslims are [a] vibrant community and we would like to be part of that change."

State Senator Larry Shaw, the longest-serving Muslim elected official in the US, agreed.

"Within the Islamic community in America are untapped resources," he said.

"We are very highly competent and capable people who can head any secretary department or deputy department or senior-level management."

The United States is home to between six to seven million Muslims.

This is more CAIR propaganda about bogus US Muslim population figures..........

              Change Policies
The Muslim organizations urged President-elect Obama to change some of the unpopular Bush policies.

"As you assume your new duties, there are some areas we hope you will list among your priorities," read their open-letter.

"This includes restoring due process, objective justice, repealing manifestly unconstitutional clauses of the USA PATRIOT ACT, ending COINTELPRO campaigns against Muslim and Arab American communities, and ensuring that our nation rejects the use of ex post facto laws."

Muslims in the US have become sensitized to the erosion of their civil rights under the Bush administration.

Many of them have complained of facing discrimination and stereotypes because of their Islamic attires or identities.

The open letter also asked Obama to pay attention to issues long ignored by the outgoing administration.

"We look forward to your proposals for providing universal healthcare to our citizens and fixing our nation’s broken immigration system."

Many Muslims believe the economy, the infrastructure and basic services, such as healthcare, have been sidelined for the interest of Bush's so-called war-on-terror.

The letter also touched on the key issue of foreign policies, asking Obama to assist in ending the deteriorating situation in the Middle East.

"We demand that our government, the US government, take immediate steps to end the immoral and illegal Israeli bombardment of Gaza and its population," said Awad.

The besieged Palestinian territory, home to 1.6 million, has been under days of Israeli strikes, which have killed more than 380 and injured some 1,800 since last Saturday.Obama has kept his deafening silence on the Gaza onslaught, one of Israel’s deadliest against Palestinians in decades.

                    • U.S. Navy intercepts Iranian arms vessel
Covert operations aim to cut Tehran's supply lines to terrorists

HERZLIYA, Israel – The U.S. Navy is conducting covert operations aimed at intercepting Iranian ships carrying weapons to rearm Hamas in the Gaza Strip, informed defense officials told WND.

The setup, which has already halted a vessel carrying Iranian munitions in recent days, acts on intelligence information provided by Israel, Egypt and Cyprus, the defense officials said.

The U.S. Navy refused to comment, but informed sources said the U.S. last week intercepted an Iranian-owned vessel found to be carrying weapons, including rockets, mortar and artillery shells. It is suspected the ship was attempting to reach the Egyptian Sinai area. If successful, the delivery would have represented a major escalation by providing Hamas with artillery, something the terrorist organization is not thought to possess.

The ship is now docked at an Egyptian port on the Red Sea after being escorted by the U.S. Navy out of the Suez Canal, which leads to the Mediterranean, the defense officials said. Due to complicated maritime laws, the U.S. and Egypt may let the ship sail to the Mediterranean, where either Israeli or Egyptian naval units would need to decide whether to entirely halt the vessel.

According to the sources, aside from patrolling the seas, the U.S. has also sent the Army's Corps of Engineers to the Egyptian Sinai desert, bringing with them advanced machinery to help Egyptian troops locate weapons smuggling tunnels that snake along the Egypt-Gaza border.

Last week, WND broke the story of Egyptian troops undergoing training in Texas on the use of American military technology to uncover Hamas' weapons smuggling tunnels. A top Egyptian intelligence official told WND the Egyptian troops arrived in Texas in recent days, where they have been undergoing private courses on the use of proprietary, secretive U.S. technology that makes use of sonar and certain frequencies to locate underground tunnels along the Egypt-Gaza border.

The WND story was referenced in scores of Arab-language articles this past weekend, including an article in the state-run Egyptian media, which did not deny the report.

The new naval patrols and U.S. presence along the Gaza border comes in line with a memorandum of understanding signed between Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and outgoing U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The deal aims to curb Hamas rearmament and also includes patrols of the Persian Gulf, Sudan, and neighboring states.

One of Israel's main goals for its offensive was to halt Hamas' ability to smuggle weapons across the Egypt-Gaza border.

Israel is negotiating an international monitoring mechanism it hopes will stop Hamas from smuggling weapons from neighboring Egypt into Gaza. But previous international monitors stationed along the Egypt-Gaza border fled their duty and repeatedly failed to stem Hamas' weapons smuggling.

The monitors were stationed at the border following Israel's 2005 evacuation of the Gaza Strip.

The Israel Defense Forces reportedly destroyed 60 to 70 percent of an estimated 600 smuggling tunnels between Gaza and neighboring Egypt.

Hamas sources speaking to WND claim the actual number of tunnels is closer to 1,300. The sources claimed Hamas was working to change the method of its weapons smuggling to rely more on sea shipments and less on smuggling tunnels.

Last Tuesday, the Associated Press reported from the Egypt-Gaza border that just hours after Israeli troops withdrew from the border area, the smuggling tunnels were back in business, used by locals to bring in supplies.

The AP also reported hundreds of workers in southern Gaza labored to repair dozens of tunnels dug under tents or fake greenhouses.

                            • Obama seeks Republican help on economy

WASHINGTON (AP) - Hours before a meeting with President Barack Obama, House Republican leaders sought to rally opposition Tuesday to a White House-backed economic stimulus measure with an $825 billion price tag.

Several officials said that Reps. John Boehner of Ohio, the GOP leader, and Eric Cantor of Virginia, his second-in-command, delivered the appeal at a closed-door meeting of the Republican rank and file. Both men said the legislation contains too much wasteful spending that will not help the economy recover from its worst nosedive since the Great Depression, the officials added.

The officials who described the closed-door session did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to disclose the discussions.

The request for opposition came one day after Obama extended Republicans an olive branch, appealing to House Democrats to jettison an estimated $200 million ticketed for family planning services for low-income people.

The House is expected to vote Wednesday on the bill, and congressional leaders have pledged to have it ready for Obama's signature by mid-February.

Obama has made economic recovery his top presidential priority, and the political maneuvering surrounding the stimulus legislation has become intense, only one week into his tenure.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said in a televised interview that Obama was having problems with Democrats, whom he said favor spending over tax cuts as a remedy for the economic crisis.

"We think the country needs a stimulus," he said on NBC's "Today" show. But he also said that he believes most people do not believe it will be accomplished through projects like "fixing up the mall," a reference to fundings to repair the National Mall in Washington. He said Republicans want a bill that devotes 40 percent of its cost to tax cuts.

The family planning funding was a particular target of Boehner and other Republicans, and Obama's intervention was timed for his meetings in the Capitol.

The decision angered some House Democrats - Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. had defended the funding in a weekend television interview - and the White House sought to ease the concerns.

"While he agrees that greater access to family planning is good policy, the president believes that the funding for it does not belong in the economic recovery and reinvestment plan," said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs.

Obama arranged two separate meetings with Republicans in the Capitol, one in the House, the other in the Senate. It was his first visit since his inauguration a week ago, and White House officials said that Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a former Republican congressman, would make the trip with him.

"The goal is to seek their input. He wants to hear their ideas," Gibbs said of the president. "If there are good ideas - and I think he assumes there will be - we will look at those ideas."

The presidential spokesman would not, however, reveal what additional concessions Obama may be willing to make, if any, to demonstrate his seriousness about securing Republican support.

"We don't have pride of authorship. We understand that this is a process of give and take to produce what the president believes is the strongest plan to get the economy going again," Gibbs said.

The White House-backed legislation includes roughly $550 billion in spending as wewll as $275 billion in tax cuts.

Most of the spending is on items such as health care, jobless benefits, food stamps and other programs that benefit victims of the recession.

House Republicans have drafted an alternative. Except for an extension of unemployment benefits, it consists exclusively of tax cuts.

Obama's meetings come as the Federal Reserve examines unconventional ways to lift the economy, and one day after several companies, including Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), Home Depot Inc. (HD), and General Motors Corp. (GM), announced sweeping job cuts as they seek to remain solvent in an economic environment that worsens by the day amid turmoil in the financial, housing and credit sectors.

                              • President Obama Meets Washington
John Batchelor on January 27, 2009 11:30 PM

President Obama's Ninety Minutes with the GOP House.
My best House source tells me that the president spoke for thirty minutes to the House Republican conference and then took questions for as much as an hour, though short and predictable questions. It was not a complicated exchange. The president wants the GOP House to support a stimulus bill that is one large earmark -- a hog farm for the ages. The GOP, having wrecked itself over fourteen years of spending like Democrats, having tolerated ruffians like Duke Cunningham and rascals like Tom Delay, even having recently gone along in a fractured way with the TARP folly last fall, now discovers principle and rises to protest: Mr. President, how can spending $1 trillion on the federal government's fantasies of pork mean anything substantial to the trouble in the banks, the markets and private enterprise? What does $200 million for the lawn in the Washington Mall, or $150 million for face-lifting the Smithsonian, provide for the auto industry, or the pharmaceutical industry, or the newspaper business, or the tens of thousand of jobs under pressure in Silicon Valley? The answer is, Nothing. The president had no answers for the GOP House. The president either realizes that Mrs. Pelosi and Senator Reid have handed him an old trout to sell to the American people as a flying horse, or the president does not realize it is a old trout and is a victim of a gargantuan (and not unwitty) prank by his Democratic majority in Congress.

                                What Happens Now?
Mrs. Pelosi means to force the House vote on the stimulus bill within the next news cycle. My information as of the evening before the vote is that there are not ten votes for the bill in the House GOP. Amendments will be offered, and at least one GOP leader has been told that his amendment will be ruled out of order. Chair of the House Republican Conference Mike Pence of Indiana (right, with House Minority Leader John Boehner), who is likely running for the Senate seat from Indian in 2010, spoke bluntly late in the day that the bill "won't stimulate anything but more government and more debt." No one in the House GOP disagrees. The scale of the pork is staggering. Mrs. Pelosi can pass the bill with her clear majority, but she will not get all of her caucus, and she will be lucky to get as many GOP votes as she loses Democratic votes. This is a partisan dog fight, and Mrs. Pelosi aims to win ugly. The Senate takes up the bill for markup next week, however early indications are that there is no solid support for the bill with the GOP. Senator John McCain says he will not vote for the bill as is. Senator Chuck Grassley issued a statement today that he disregards the Democratic tactics of elbowing out GOP comments and contributions -- and that there is a rumor that no GOP amendment will be accepted, that Democratic members are told now to vote against them.

                                Rahm Emanuel Convinces the President?
What may be happening is that the notorious partisan attack terrier Rahm Emanuel, newly aggrandized as chief of staff at the popular White House, has convinced his boss the president that he, RE, can deliver the House for the stimulus bill. RE may have left out the detail that he can only deliver what Mrs. Pelosi delivers. Mr. Emanuel is vaguely ironic. Perhaps he told the president that he could deliver "the vote." Who knows? The results will not support the fairy tale of post-partisan politics, or bi-partisan politics, or beyond partisan politics. The stimulus bill vote in the House begins the end of the honeymoon. But ever so politely. The GOP will be excessively cheerful and generous and companionable, overflowing with praise for the president, as they file forward to register their "no" vote. The guess at this time is that Mrs. Pelosi or Jack Murtha or one of the exuberant whips on the winning side will comment to the media something rudely colorful about the GOP vote, such as "GOP, drop dead."
