Weekly Review and Rant, October 14th
Overall a pretty good week at 3-2.
Let’s get to the breakdown.
NFL Review
“Well I told you once and I told you twice,
but you never listen to my advice.”
(Mick and Keith)
What did I just say in my last weekly review –
“LOOK AT YOUR LOSSES.
Don’t just make a bet, win or lose, and move on to the next one. Review them. Learn from them.
I’m 3-2 on my NFL bets.
I have two takeaways from this.
One, consider staying away from props.
Two, and more importantly – STICK with my betting models/methods/systems, whatever you want to call them.”
And what did I do on Sunday?
I bet ON the Jets and AGAINST the Giants.
Won the NYJ bet, lost the NYG bet.
Guess which one was NOT one of my models/methods/systems.
As Homer Simpson would say, “Doh!”
And about that Giants game…
Three weeks ago North Carolina QB CJ Bailey was attempting to run out the clock on the last play of the game. He fumbled in the end zone and North Carolina lost. At the time it was called the stupidest play of the year.
But then, Washington QB Jaden Daniels said, “Hold my beer.”
Anyone who follows the NFL has seen the play.
Most fans, bettors, and sports writers blamed Daniels for the loss. And yes, he showed a total lack of awareness of the down, situation, and time left on the clock.
But there’s someone else whose JOB is to MAKE SURE he’s AWARE of those things – head coach Dan Quinn.
The blame falls on Quinn’s shoulder, but not just because of the final play. He lost the game for his team at the beginning of OT.
With time on the play clock running out he called a TO rather than take a 5-yard penalty.
Watching it at the time I thought, “You only get two timeouts in OT, and wasting that one is going to come back and bite you on the ass.”
(With sports betting, I’m clairvoyant at times!)
Had Quinn not wasted that time out they could have used it on the final play and kicked the game winning field goal (and infinitely more importantly in the overall worldview scheme of things, got me a Push and spared me the loss.)
But that’s why you don’t hire a defensive coordinator as your new head coach when he’s failed miserably as a head coach in his previous chances.
Yes, Daniels showed the world he has the sports IQ of a hamster. But Quinn showed the world that if he was a guest on Celebrity Jeopardy he would finish in last place, losing to a chimpanzee and an empty chair.
But when it comes to assigning blame, I point to the top, Josh Harris, Managing Partner of the ownership group. While looking for a new head coach in 2024, someone stood up in the meeting and said, “Quinn just got fired by Atlanta after two seasons of 7-9. HE’S OUR GUY!”
And Harris didn’t say, “Sit down, Bozo.”
Yes, Quinn got lucky in his initial season and finished with a winning record. But in the next season the natural order of things was restored as he went 5-12.
He should have been fired then.
NFL teams only get 17 chances to win a game.
Every one is critical.
Quinn blew it again on Sunday, and Washington has only one win in five games.
ONE!
Yet, despite his history of failure, and now Sunday’s debacle, for some strange reason Quinn remains as Washington’s HC.
Harris shouldn’t have waited till Monday morning.
Quinn should have been fired Sunday night.
And on Monday morning, Harrison and the group should have bought out the company Quinn’s wife works for and fired her too, just for good measure.
College Football Review
I had a 2-1 week. Normally, I’m grateful for this.
I didn’t lose money, and I hit the Holy Grail goal of 67%.
But I made a bad call on the one loss.
In my article dated 10/10, I mentioned I was running a test to see if one of my new Bowl models that was successful last season would work in the regular season. It was 2-0 going into Saturday. I listed the three games that qualified. And I bet on and recommended one of them, UCF +10′.
The score is tied at halftime so I still have all of my points left for the second half. But a Q4 fumble by UFC that turned into a scoop and score by Oklahoma State turned my Golden Knight’s bet into a Golden Shower on my bankroll as they lost by 14 points.
Three games qualified.
The play went 2-1, 67%, and I went 0-1, 0%.
I won’t make that mistake again this week.
I’m betting every game that qualifies.
WNBA Review
Who cares?
I don’t.
And apparently a lot of other people don’t, either.
The petty, jealous, officials that run the league office used the refs to eliminate Caitlin and Cunningham in the deciding game three of the playoffs (35 free throws for the Aces, just 20 for the Fever.)
The after effect?
The opening game in the Fever/Aces drew an estimated 2.1 million viewers.
The opening games of the semi-finals drew approximately 500,000 and 650,000 viewers.
That’s a drop off of 69% and 76%.
All season long the league ran commercials celebrating their 30th anniversary, and the announcers made sure to mention it in every broadcast.
What they conveniently and purposely failed to mention is that they have lost money in EVERY season.
But they don’t care (the intentional elimination of the Fever proved it once again.)
You have to wonder – at what point is someone in the NBA leadership going to stand up and say, “Why do we continue to pour money into this losing venture year after year?”
My prediction for the 2027 season.
Indiana will trade or drop Sophie Cunningham.
The league will not tolerate another season of her protecting Clark, on the court physically and off the court verbally.
The WNBA leadership – insufferable Twat Waffles, the lot of them.
