Bracket Tips: If you’re filling out a bracket and looking for tips on making picks, you’ve come to the right place!
The NCAA tournament offers some fairly easy “pickin’s” for the first round or two. There are very few upsets (good teams losing to worse teams) in the first round as the higher seeds almost always beat the much lower seeds. This is not to say that if an 8 seed is playing a 7 seed that the 8 is going to win easy. We’re more referring to 16 vs. 1, 15 vs. 2 etc. The top dogs almost always win and move on to round 2.
As the tournament progresses and goes deeper, things become quite a bit tougher as when good teams play good teams literally anything can happen. Things to take into consideration when making your selections include: strength of conference, win/loss record over the course of the season, previous meetings between the two teams, how well the teams play on a neutral court as very few teams end up playing on their home court during the tourney, etc.
Advice on Beating the Spread: This is quite a bit opposite of picking straight up winners. The reason for this is that there’s a rule of thumb in sports betting that goes something like this… “Good teams win and bad teams cover”. You can be sure that we’ll see some “inflated lines” (point spreads) when top teams play lesser known teams, especially the small schools who are in the big dance becasue they won their conference tournament. These teams are often times much lesser in talent, but not necessarily bad teams. Many novice sports bettors automatically assume that a Kansas will blister a Davidson.
The bookies know that the general public thinks this way and then adds on a few points to Kansas knowing nobody wants to bet on Davidson. This gives a team like Davidson an advantage against the spread and makes them the more likely team to cover. Just remember when looking at the odds that good teams win straight up and bad teams cover. If you find yourself on many favorites you are likely in for a very long tournament!
