What Did We Learn From Last Weekend?
What a wild ride! Talladega always ends with some serious excitement as the drivers fight to be the first to the finish line. For Chase Briscoe, it was an amazing finish, getting to victory lane just 0.145 seconds over Todd Gilliland and teammate Ty Gibbs, who he credited with giving him the push needed for his first-ever superspeedway victory. It also gives Briscoe the opportunity to race for the season championship. He joins Denny Hamlin, who already has a win in this round, with both drivers securing their spots in the Final Four championship race.
Where Are We Headed This Weekend?
This weekend, we’re likely to see a few more moments of unpredictability as the drivers go from the longest oval to the shortest oval on the circuit. Drivers and teams will battle it out at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday. This 0.526-mile asphalt oval features 12 degrees of banking in the turns and none on the straights. Being relatively flat and short, with only 800 feet of straightaways, drivers tend to lap the field quickly—opening the door for plenty of lap traffic interference. The drivers who excel here are typically the more seasoned veterans.
Odds and Value Picks
When it comes to picking winners, it’s hard to deny a couple of our veterans. Let’s take a look at some potential contenders heading into this weekend’s race:
Winner: Ryan Blaney (+300)
Blaney is indisputably the best driver at Martinsville among active drivers. In his last seven races here, he’s earned two wins and an average finish of 4.6. With 182 laps led and only one finish outside of the top 10, Blaney should absolutely be on your radar this week.
Mid-Range Pick: Bubba Wallace (+2200)
Wallace has an average finish of 9.9 in his last seven starts, with a best finish of third—coming earlier this year in March. Between Martinsville, Bristol, and Richmond, Wallace has multiple top-5 finishes and continues to improve. With nothing to lose and everything to gain, Wallace could surprise with a strong performance this weekend.
Dark Horse: Ty Gibbs (+3500)
Gibbs has struggled on this particular short track in the past, but 2025 has shown steady improvement. He finished 13th here in March and has since posted a 3rd and 10th-place finish at Bristol. With momentum from his strong Talladega run, Gibbs could easily outperform expectations again this week.
Playoff Picture
With this being the final race in the Round of 8, expect fierce competition. Here’s how the points stack up after last weekend’s superspeedway madness:
- Chase Briscoe
- Denny Hamlin
- Christopher Bell
- Kyle Larson
- William Byron
- Joey Logano
- Ryan Blaney
- Chase Elliott
Elliott and Blaney are both statistically out of contention on points alone. That’s why this weekend is absolutely critical—Blaney needs a win to stay alive in the championship hunt. Elliott, who’s had success at Martinsville in the past, will be equally motivated to make a statement. With only two races left before the season champion is crowned, who will claim the final two transfer spots after Martinsville? Tune in to NBC for what’s sure to be a thrilling short track showdown!
