Denver Broncos at Atlanta Falcons

The books are treating this one differently than every other Friday night preseason game, and there’s a very good reason for it.
The Broncos are on the road as 5.5-point favorites with a total of 38.5. On a preseason board where 14 of 16 games are sitting at 2.5 points or less, Denver laying nearly a touchdown as the visitor is a massive outlier. That spread opened at -3.5 and has been bet up to -5.5 in the days leading into the game. The total has ticked up from 37.5 to 38.5. Both moves are pointing in the same direction, and once you dig into the coaching setup here, they start making a lot of sense.
Let’s talk about the two head coaches, because this one has a fascinating storyline.
Kevin Stefanski makes his Atlanta Falcons debut Friday night. Stefanski was fired by Cleveland after the 2025 season, ending a six-year run in which he won two AP Coach of the Year awards (2020 and 2023) and took the Browns to the playoffs twice. Arthur Blank hired him almost immediately to replace Raheem Morris, who was let go after back-to-back 8-9 seasons in Atlanta. Stefanski is a first-year Falcons head coach with something to prove after a rough final stretch in Cleveland, and everything about that setup screams “play your guys hard in the preseason and set a tone.”
The most important preseason data point on Stefanski is this: he went 3-0 straight up in exhibition games last year with the Browns, capped off by a 19-17 win over the Rams. Stefanski isn’t a coach who mails in August. He treats preseason like an evaluation and a chance to build reps. In his Falcons debut, in front of a new fan base, in his first chance to define what his tenure in Atlanta will look like, he’s not going to be running vanilla playcalling and pulling starters after one series.
On the other sideline, Sean Payton’s preseason totals record with the Broncos sits at 6-3 to the Over. That’s a 66.7% Over hit rate over his three seasons in Denver, one of the strongest Over-leaning coaching splits in the entire NFL. Payton has always treated preseason like it matters. He plays his guys, he calls his game, and he expects production. Last year’s preseason opener was the template — Denver went to Levi’s Stadium and beat the 49ers 30-9 in their first exhibition game. Payton isn’t sitting anyone on the bench, and the results have showed up on the scoreboard consistently.
So we have Sean Payton with his 66.7% Over rate against Kevin Stefanski in his Falcons debut. Both coaches are wired to attack the preseason rather than survive it. Both offenses will be operating with the goal of making things happen.
Add in the venue. Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a fast indoor track. Domes traditionally play toward the Over in the NFL, and preseason games in domes tend to be even more offensive-friendly than regular season games. There’s no weather, no wind, no field condition to slow anyone down.
There’s one more thing worth flagging. The Falcons were an interesting offensive team in 2025 — Michael Penix Jr. flashed talent when given opportunities, and Bijan Robinson is one of the most explosive running backs in football. Whether Penix plays a series or two before Stefanski cycles through his backup quarterbacks, the Atlanta offense has real weapons capable of putting up points quickly.
The total has moved from 37.5 to 38.5, which is a modest bump but a bump in the right direction. Combine that with Payton’s 66.7% Over hit rate, Stefanski’s aggressive preseason approach, Denver’s 30-point performance in last year’s preseason opener, and an indoor game environment, and this looks like a spot where the market is still slightly undervaluing the ceiling of this game.
I looked at the side too. Broncos -5.5 on the road is a big number in preseason, but if you believe in Payton’s aggressive approach and Denver’s overall depth advantage over an Atlanta roster in transition to a new coaching staff, you can talk yourself into it. I’d rather ride the total, though. Preseason spreads that big can flip on one blocked kick or long return, and the Over gives me contributions from both offenses to help cash the ticket.
The Pick: Broncos/Falcons Over 38.5
