Ole Miss Rebels at Florida Gators

Florida is a 3.5-point home favorite over Ole Miss with a total of 60.5. My play is the Rebels getting the points.
The line movement here is worth examining carefully. This game opened with Ole Miss as a 1.5-point favorite. The spread has moved all the way to Florida -3.5 — a 5-point swing toward the Gators. Public money has moved onto Florida after their impressive 44-39 road win over Auburn, but that inflation may be creating value on the Ole Miss side. The advanced metrics support that reading: SP+ ratings actually project Florida at only -1.7 in this matchup, meaning the market has moved the line about two full points beyond what the underlying data suggests.
Ole Miss is coming off their signature win of the season. They beat LSU 32-24 in Oxford in the Magnolia Bowl last week — a game where they took down the SEC’s top-ranked team with an elite defense. That’s the same LSU team that entered the game with the nation’s best defense allowing 2.5 yards per play. Ole Miss scored 32 points against that defense. That’s not a fluky performance. That’s Trinidad Chambliss and Pete Golding’s team playing at a national championship contender level.
Trinidad Chambliss is playing like a Heisman contender. His elite production against LSU cemented his status as one of the top quarterbacks in college football. Against a Florida defense that allowed 39 points to Auburn last week (that’s Auburn’s offense putting up nearly 40 on this Gators defense), Chambliss should be able to hit 27-30 points. That’s within the range that keeps this game competitive regardless of the outcome.
Florida’s win over Auburn was impressive but it was also a shootout. The Gators scored 44 points against Auburn’s defense, but they also gave up 39. That’s not the profile of a team that consistently wins by 4+ points against top-5 SEC opposition. Auburn’s offense isn’t as effective as Ole Miss’s, so if Auburn can score 39 on Florida, Ole Miss should be able to score 28-32 at minimum.
The Swamp is a great home venue, but 3.5 in an SEC divisional matchup between two 3-0 teams is asking a lot. Even elite home favorites often struggle to cover big spreads against ranked opponents. Pete Golding is a defensive-minded coach who game-plans specifically to slow down the game and win close matchups. That’s the exact profile that keeps games inside the small number.
Realistic outcomes: Ole Miss 30, Florida 27 (Ole Miss wins outright); Florida 27, Ole Miss 24 (3-point margin, Ole Miss covers +3.5 by 0.5); Florida 31, Ole Miss 28 (3-point margin, Ole Miss push); or Florida 34, Ole Miss 24 (10-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover or push for Ole Miss.
Chambliss’s ability to compete against elite defenses and Pete Golding’s defensive game-planning make this a spot where laying nearly a field goal to Florida looks like overpaying for their Week 3 win over Auburn.
