Penn State is a 10.5-point home favorite over Wisconsin with a total of 45.5. My play is the Nittany Lions to cover.

Wisconsin’s season-opening loss to Notre Dame is the entry point here. The Badgers went into South Bend on September 6 and lost 41-13 — a 28-point defeat to a top-5 opponent. That’s the specific type of matchup that shows exactly how Wisconsin performs against elite competition, and the answer is not well. They couldn’t sustain drives, they couldn’t stop Notre Dame’s offense, and they couldn’t hang with a program playing at a national title contender level. Penn State isn’t Notre Dame, but they’re a top-15 program at home under the lights in a Big Ten opener, and the talent gap is closer to Notre Dame than to Eastern Michigan.

Speaking of Eastern Michigan — Wisconsin’s 54-10 blowout of that opponent shows they can pile up points against weak competition. Carter Joseph threw for 362 yards in that game. But Eastern Michigan is a MAC opponent with limited defensive talent. Those numbers don’t translate against a Penn State defense that has allowed just 9 total points across their first two games.

Penn State’s defense is legitimately elite. They shut out Marshall 45-0 and held Temple to just 9 points. That’s a defensive unit playing at a level that will completely shut down Wisconsin’s offense. Carter Joseph won’t be able to throw for 362 yards against Penn State’s secondary. The Badgers’ rushing attack (which has been solid but not dominant) will get stuffed by Penn State’s front seven. The result is a Wisconsin offense that will struggle to hit even 13-17 points.

James Franklin’s team at home has been consistently dominant. When they’re playing at Beaver Stadium with the crowd behind them and their defense at full strength, they win games decisively. The +9.5 line at open was reasonable, but the move to -10.5 reflects sharp money identifying the specific matchup mismatch.

Wisconsin’s inability to compete with better teams also shows up in their recent history. Luke Fickell is now in his fourth season and hasn’t been able to consistently produce wins against ranked opponents. His teams tend to play well against inferior competition and struggle against the top of the Big Ten. That pattern doesn’t reverse on the road at Beaver Stadium against a Penn State team that has been rolling.

Realistic outcomes: Penn State 31, Wisconsin 10 (21-point margin, PSU covers -10.5); Penn State 34, Wisconsin 14 (20-point margin, covers); Penn State 27, Wisconsin 13 (14-point margin, covers by 3.5); or Penn State 24, Wisconsin 17 (7-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for Penn State. Given the defensive mismatch and Wisconsin’s ceiling against elite competition (13 points vs Notre Dame), Penn State should win by 14+.

The Pick: Penn State Nittany Lions -10.5
