Oregon is a 2.5-point road favorite over USC with a total of 62.5. My play is the Ducks laying the small number.

USC’s defense is the entry point here. Through four games — all wins on paper — the Trojans defense has ranked 90th in the nation in EPA per pass and 107th in EPA per rush. That’s a bottom-tier defensive unit. They’ve given up 35 points to Rutgers, 30 to Louisiana, and 26 to San Jose State. None of those teams are elite offenses. Now they face Dante Moore and an Oregon offense that ranks 6th nationally by SP+.

The specific matchup problem for USC is their inability to stop the run. Oregon is going to be able to establish the ground game, control the clock, and set up play-action opportunities for Moore. Against a Trojans defensive front that has been consistently gashed by Group of Five opponents, Oregon should be able to score 38-45 points. That’s the specific ceiling they’ve shown throughout their three games (Oregon has scored 31+ in each of its games), and against USC’s specific weaknesses, they’ll hit the upper end of that range.

USC’s offense is real. Jayden Maiava has 12 touchdowns and just one interception through four games. He’ll produce points. But USC’s ATS profile is what matters here. The Trojans are 1-3 against the spread despite being 4-0 straight up. That’s a team that consistently underperforms market expectations — the market thinks they’re better than they play, and the actual results don’t match the ranking. When a favorite has a 25% covering rate, laying against them (or fading them) is where the value lives.

The head-to-head history matters too. Oregon has won four straight in this series and beat USC 42-27 in Eugene last year. That’s not just recent dominance — that’s specific style-matchup issues that USC hasn’t solved. Lincoln Riley’s offense will score, but his defense has failed against Oregon repeatedly. That trend continues Saturday.

Dan Lanning’s Ducks are coming off a shocking loss to Oklahoma State but rebounded with a comfortable win over Portland State. That kind of adversity often refocuses a program, and Oregon will be motivated to prove they’re still a legitimate playoff contender.

The line movement is also worth noting. This opened at Oregon -5.5 and has moved down to -2.5 to -3. That’s public money coming in on USC after their 4-0 start, but the actual on-field profile still favors Oregon. Sharp bettors have been slower to move toward USC, and the number should probably be closer to Oregon -4 based on the underlying data.

Realistic outcomes: Oregon 38, USC 31 (7-point margin, Oregon covers -2.5); Oregon 42, USC 35 (7-point margin, covers by 4.5); Oregon 45, USC 38 (7-point margin, covers); or USC 41, Oregon 35 (USC wins). Three of four scenarios cover for Oregon.

The Pick: Oregon Ducks -2.5
