SMU is a 20.5-point home favorite over Boston College with a total of 56.5. My play is the Mustangs to cover.

The head-to-head history is where I start. Last November, SMU went into Chestnut Hill and beat Boston College 45-13 at BC’s home stadium. That’s a 32-point road win. Now the game shifts to SMU’s home venue at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, where the Mustangs have real home-field advantage and where Rhett Lashlee’s team has been dominant in recent years. Translating a 32-point road win into a similar or larger margin at home is very achievable.

Boston College’s Mason McKenzie has been turnover-prone this season. His quarterback statistics through four games show multiple two-interception performances against opponents that weren’t necessarily elite defenses. Against SMU’s pass rush and secondary — which have combined for consistent takeaways — McKenzie is likely to make multiple mistakes that shorten drives and give SMU the extra possessions they need to build a large lead.

The offensive gap between these teams is significant. Boston College has produced just 1,410 total yards on the entire season. That’s 353 yards per game — a mark that ranks near the bottom of Power Four football. SMU has produced 592 yards in a single game against real competition. When one team’s season total is roughly what the other produces in one game, the offensive mismatch is real.

SMU’s defense has some issues (allowing 148.5 rushing yards per game and 6 rushing touchdowns), but Boston College’s rushing attack hasn’t been able to exploit weaker defenses to that degree. BC produced just 150 rushing yards on 38 carries in a recent game — 3.9 yards per carry. Against a Mustangs defense that at least plays physical football at home, that number should drop closer to 3.5 yards per carry, meaning BC can’t sustain drives.

SMU’s offensive output has been elite. They average 37.0 points per game (35th nationally) and can score in multiple ways. Kevin Jennings and the passing attack have been effective, and the Mustangs’ explosive plays create quick scoring drives that keep their offensive rhythm humming. Against a BC defense that hasn’t shown the ability to slow down elite offenses, expect the Mustangs to hit 38-45 points.

Bill O’Brien is a good coach who prepares his team well, but the roster comparison and the historical head-to-head both point in SMU’s direction. Even if O’Brien’s game plan is solid, the personnel gap is real. And when SMU has been at home this year, they’ve been able to execute their offense at a high level.

Realistic outcomes: SMU 42, BC 17 (25-point margin, SMU covers -20.5); SMU 45, BC 13 (32-point margin, SMU covers by 11.5); SMU 38, BC 14 (24-point margin, covers by 3.5); or SMU 35, BC 20 (15-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for SMU. Given the head-to-head history and BC’s offensive limitations, that outcome distribution looks right.

The Pick: SMU Mustangs -20.5
