Miami is a 16.5-point road favorite over Clemson with a total of 48.5. My play is the Tigers getting the points.

The number has already started coming back toward Clemson. This game opened with Miami favored by nearly 19 points and has dropped to 16.5. That’s a significant move on a big number, and laying more than two touchdowns on the road in a night game at Death Valley is asking a lot of anyone, even a top-five team.

Clemson’s defense has quietly turned its season around. The Tigers were embarrassed 51-10 by LSU in the opener, but they’ve won three straight since then and are 2-0 in ACC play. Over those three games, Clemson has allowed just 12.3 points and 282 yards per game. Last week at California, the Tigers held Cal to 145 passing yards in a 24-10 road win. The secondary, led by cornerbacks Ashton Hampton and Elliot Washington, is the strength of this team.

Miami’s numbers are eye-popping, but look at who they came against. The Hurricanes are 4-0 and average 51.8 points per game, but those games were Stanford (45-6), Florida A&M (77-7), Wake Forest (33-20) and Central Michigan (52-3). Wake Forest is the only team that made Miami work, and that game finished as a 13-point margin, inside this number. Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney lead a pro-style offense that likes to establish the run, and against a defense that has tightened up, Miami is more likely to grind out a two-score win than to run away with it.

Clemson’s offense is the honest problem. The Tigers average just 21.0 points per game, convert only 24% of their third downs (124th nationally) and are starting freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds, who averaged just 5.1 yards per attempt against Cal. Miami’s defense is allowing 9.0 points per game and has committed only two turnovers on offense all season. Clemson isn’t going to win a shootout.

But the Tigers don’t need to. With a total of 48.5, this projects as a game where Miami lands somewhere in the high 20s or low 30s. If Clemson leans on running back Gideon Davidson (7.2 yards per carry against Cal), shortens the game and gets into the mid-teens, 16.5 points covers. Fewer possessions and a defense that has held its last three opponents to 12.3 points per game is the formula for a backdoor cover in a hostile night environment.

The last time these programs met, Miami won 28-20 in double overtime in 2023. This year’s Clemson team isn’t as talented as that one, but the venue and the setup are the same.

Realistic outcomes: Miami 31, Clemson 20 (11-point margin, Clemson covers +16.5); Miami 28, Clemson 14 (14-point margin, Clemson covers by 2.5); Miami 27, Clemson 13 (14-point margin, Clemson covers); or Miami 38, Clemson 14 (24-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for Clemson.

The Pick: Clemson Tigers +16.5
