Iowa Hawkeyes at Washington Huskies

Washington is a 1.5 to 2.5-point home favorite over Iowa with a total of 41.5. My play is the Hawkeyes getting the points.
The number itself is the entry point here. This game opened at Washington -1.5 with both sides priced close to even on the moneyline. Home field is usually worth about three points, so the market is telling us it sees Iowa as the better team on a neutral field. Getting points with that team is the right side of a game priced this tight.
Iowa’s defense travels. Even in last week’s 31-14 loss to No. 5 Ohio State, the Hawkeyes kept it competitive into the second half against one of the most explosive offenses in the country. Phil Parker’s unit still allowed just 8.0 points per game through the first four weeks, including a 20-19 road win at Michigan on a last-second touchdown. Washington’s offense, with Jedd Fisch calling plays himself after losing his offensive coordinator, has been inconsistent. The Huskies scored 16 against Utah State and 24 in a loss to Minnesota.
Washington has dropped two straight. The Huskies lost 27-24 to Minnesota and then 25-21 at No. 18 USC last week, a game in which USC’s go-ahead score came on a fumble return touchdown. The Washington defense has been solid all season, allowing 16.8 points per game, but the offense ranks 124th nationally in rushing at 107.3 yards per game. A Washington team that can’t run the ball is going to have trouble against a disciplined Iowa defense in a game with a total this low.
The honest concern is Iowa’s offense. The Hawkeyes ran for just 39 yards on 21 carries against Ohio State, the third time this season they’ve been held under 100 rushing yards, and quarterback Hank Brown left early in the fourth quarter with a mild sprain. Jeremy Hecklinski came in and led Iowa’s only touchdown drive. Iowa is also on a short week, going from a Saturday game to a Friday night road trip to Seattle. If Brown is limited, points will be hard to come by.
But with a total of 41.5, this projects as a low-scoring, field-position game, and that’s the type of game Kirk Ferentz’s teams win or keep close. Iowa won the last meeting 40-16 at Kinnick, and the market has these teams nearly even. In a game likely to be decided by a field goal or less, every point matters.
Realistic outcomes: Iowa 20, Washington 17 (Iowa wins outright); Iowa 17, Washington 16 (Iowa wins outright); Washington 20, Iowa 19 (1-point margin, Iowa covers +1.5); or Washington 24, Iowa 17 (7-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for Iowa.
The Pick: Iowa Hawkeyes +1.5
