Maryland Terrapins at Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State is a 34.5-point home favorite over Maryland with a total of 56.5. My play is the Buckeyes to cover.
Maryland’s defense has collapsed. The Terrapins have allowed 45.7 points per game over their last three: 35 to Virginia Tech, 54 to UCLA and 48 at Nebraska last week. They’re 2-3 overall, 0-2 in the Big Ten and 2-3 against the spread, and their wins came against FCS Hampton and UConn. Speculation about Mike Locksley’s future is rampant. A team in that state going on the road to face a top-five opponent is in trouble.
Ohio State has handled its business. The No. 5 Buckeyes are 4-1, 2-0 in the Big Ten and 4-1 against the spread. Last week they went to Iowa and won 31-14 against a ranked opponent. With Indiana on deck, Ryan Day doesn’t want any sloppiness at home, and Homecoming at the Horseshoe gives the starters every reason to build a big lead early.
The history fits too. Ohio State is 9-0 all-time against Maryland, with an average margin of just over 32 points. The Buckeyes have won twice by 59. Day is 4-0 against the Terrapins.
The risk with any spread this big is the backdoor. Maryland has scored 23 or more in three of its five games, and Ohio State will empty the bench once this is decided. The last meeting, a 37-17 Ohio State win in 2023, wouldn’t have covered a number like this, and Maryland scored 30 as a 27.5-point underdog in 2022. If the Buckeyes go up 42-10 and pull the starters, a couple of late Maryland scores could push this inside the number. But this Maryland defense is giving up points to everyone, and Ohio State’s backups can score too. A 52-13 type of game is the most likely outcome.
