BYU Cougars at TCU Horned Frogs
Saturday, October 3, 2026
7:00 PM ET, Amon G. Carter Stadium
BYU is a 6.5-point road favorite over TCU with a total of 48.5. My play is the Horned Frogs getting the points.
TCU’s defense is the entry point here. The Horned Frogs are allowing just 12.5 points per game, 14th in the country, and neither of their two losses got away from them. They lost 15-10 to North Carolina in the season opener in Dublin and 21-13 at UCF last week. Both were one-score games on the road or at a neutral site. Sonny Dykes’ team doesn’t get blown out, and this is its first home game against a Power Four opponent this season.
TCU has also been a reliable cover at home, going 6-2 against the spread in its last eight games at Amon G. Carter Stadium. Fort Worth at night with a top-10 opponent in town is the kind of setting where that trend shows up.
BYU is legitimately good. The No. 9 Cougars are 3-0, averaging 44.0 points per game and allowing just 15.7. The run game is historic: 262.7 yards per game at 6.7 yards per carry, ninth in the nation. LJ Martin ran for 176 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries against Colorado State, and Preston Rex, Journee Tonga and DeVaughn Eka have added 289 more yards behind him. That ground game is the biggest risk to this pick.
The flip side is that BYU’s dominance has come against Colorado State and a soft early schedule. TCU is the first Power Four defense the Cougars have faced, and it’s one that has held every opponent to 21 points or fewer. A run-heavy BYU offense facing a defense that tackles well is a recipe for long drives that eat clock, and fewer possessions shrink the margin. This number opened at BYU -5.5 and has been bet up to -6.5, while the total has dropped from its 52.5 opener. The market expects a lower-scoring game, and a lower-scoring game makes 6.5 points more valuable.
TCU’s offense will need to do enough. Harvard transfer Jaden Craig hasn’t been spectacular, but Jeremy Payne gives the Frogs a physical runner (142 yards on 25 carries against North Carolina), and TCU is averaging 442 yards per game. Against a BYU defense allowing 15.7 points per game, 17-21 points is a realistic target.
BYU won last year’s meeting 44-13 in Provo. This game is in Fort Worth, and TCU’s defense is a different unit this year.
Realistic outcomes: BYU 24, TCU 20 (4-point margin, TCU covers +6.5); BYU 21, TCU 17 (4-point margin, TCU covers); TCU 20, BYU 17 (TCU wins outright); or BYU 31, TCU 17 (14-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for TCU.
