Miami is a 41-point home favorite over Central Michigan with a total of 53.5. My play is the Chippewas getting the massive number of points.

Laying 41 in any football game is difficult even against Group of Five opponents. Miami just beat Stanford — a Power Four opponent — by 39 points in Week 1. That’s the specific comparison point that matters. Stanford is a legitimately talented team, and Miami’s margin against them was 39. Now the Hurricanes are being asked to win by more than 41 against Central Michigan, a MAC opponent. The math doesn’t quite work.

Miami also has a specific coaching context that supports the fade. The Hurricanes have Florida State coming up on October 3 — a top-15 ACC rivalry that could decide their College Football Playoff hopes. Mario Cristobal will be aggressive in preparing for that game, which means managing this one to preserve his key players. Once Miami builds a 28-3 lead by halftime, Cristobal will pull Darian Mensah, run the ball with backups, and let his second-string defense grind out the fourth quarter. That coaching approach consistently produces backdoor covers when Miami is asked to lay big spreads against inferior opponents.

Central Michigan has real offensive competence. They just rushed for 339 yards in a 24-10 win over Wyoming. That’s a MAC team producing legitimate ground game numbers, and they’ll be able to control the ball in this game if their scheme works. Against Miami’s defense, they may not sustain drives to touchdowns, but they can eat clock and prevent Miami from getting extra offensive possessions.

The prior meeting between these teams from 2019 is worth noting. Miami won 17-12 — a 5-point game. The programs have changed significantly since then, but the specific point that comes through is that these matchups have historically been closer than the spread implies. Miami hasn’t consistently blown out MAC opponents by 41+ in recent memory.

The specific game script also works in Central Michigan’s favor. Miami’s Week 1 blowout of Stanford was 39 points. Their Week 2 game against Florida A&M (an FCS opponent) was a 70-point margin. Central Michigan is closer to Stanford in caliber than to FAMU. The realistic Miami margin against Central Michigan should be 28-38 points, not 42+.

Realistic outcomes: Miami 45, Central Michigan 10 (35-point margin, CMU covers +41); Miami 49, Central Michigan 14 (35-point margin, covers by 6); Miami 42, Central Michigan 7 (35-point margin, covers by 6); or Miami 55, Central Michigan 10 (45-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for Central Michigan.

For Miami to lay 41+ points, they need to run up the score AND Central Michigan needs to be shut down completely. Cristobal doesn’t run up scores when he has a top-15 opponent coming up next week, and Central Michigan’s offense has shown enough capability to prevent a shutout. That combination makes the underdog covering the most likely outcome.

The Pick: Central Michigan Chippewas +41
