Delaware is a 1.5-point road favorite over Middle Tennessee with a total of 48.5. My play is the Under.

These offenses struggle to score. Delaware averages 21.4 points per game, which ranks 120th nationally, and Middle Tennessee is right behind at 20.8 points per game, 121st. Delaware scores 0.3 points per play, 105th in the FBS. Middle Tennessee’s passing game averages 5.9 yards per attempt, 128th in the country. Two teams in the bottom 15 in scoring are being asked to combine for 49 points.

The totals history backs that up. Only one of Delaware’s five games this season has gone Over, and the same is true for Middle Tennessee. That’s eight Unders in 10 combined games. Ryan Carty’s Delaware teams don’t play fast, and the Blue Raiders’ offense can’t create big plays through the air. Neither profile points to a shootout.

Middle Tennessee’s offense is the bigger problem. A passing attack averaging under six yards per attempt has to grind out long drives, and those drives tend to stall short of the end zone. Delaware’s defense is only average, allowing 7.4 yards per pass attempt (86th), but it doesn’t need to be great against an offense this limited. Expect Middle Tennessee to rely on the run, chew clock and settle for field goals.

The risk is the Middle Tennessee defense. The Blue Raiders allow 8.0 yards per pass attempt (112th) and 28 points per game, and Kansas put up 55 points and 706 yards on them two weeks ago. Nick Minicucci threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns in Delaware’s opener, so the Blue Hens can move the ball through the air when given time. If Delaware gets loose early, this can get past 48.5 on one side alone. But Delaware has struggled to sustain offense over five games, and a 24-20 type of game is the most likely outcome. That stays under the number.
