The Florida State Seminoles took care of business last week despite a rather apathetic victory against South Florida 34-14. The Seminoles found their selves tied with their in-state foes at the half before a 17 point 3rd quarter closed the door on the Bulls upset chances. This Friday the Seminoles will take their talents to Chestnut Hill as the open ACC Conference play against the Boston College Eagles. The Eagles have got off to a nice 2-0 start over inferior football teams and this will be their first big game of the season. However, Boston College has proven in the past that they have the physical ability contend with the Seminoles making this Friday nights game a very interesting matchup.

Last year it took a 26 yard field goal from Florida States Robert Aguayo with 3 seconds remaining to seal the victory against the Eagles in Tallahassee. This year neither team has faced any real competition and there are a number of question marks on both sidelines. However one thing that is certain is that Boston College has one of the better defenses in the land. Last week against Howard, the Boston College defense gave up just 11 total yards for the entire game in a 76-0 crushing. The game was so bad that officials and both sidelines agreed to shorten the length of the quarters in the 2nd half. It was not until the closing minutes that Howard even had positive yardage in one of the most embarrassing games of the 2015 season.

Still, the strong defensive performance was anything but a fluke. The Eagles held Maine to just 91 total yards in their season opening 24-3 victory in another strong performance. This Friday we will see if the physical tenacity of the Eagles defense is enough to finally upset the Seminoles. Offensively, it is really hard to know exactly what Boston College has until they step on the field against a quality opponent this Friday.

The offense looked average at best against Maine and then could not be stopped against Howard which again are unreliable measuring sticks. The Eagles have just 4 starters from their 2014 group that had all kinds of issues moving the football. Chances are they are not going to be too exceptionally strong in 2015 as they break in a young sophomore quarterback in Darius Wade. However, expect coach Steve Addazio to stick to his run heavy and defensive approach meaning the deep stable of Eagles running back will get their share of touches on Friday.

For the 11th ranked Seminoles, this is a scary matchup coming off a lackluster win against South Florida and going to Chestnut Hill on a Friday night. If you consider the fact the Seminoles are just 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games and consider the mere 7.5 point spread, this game has close written all over it. The key to this game in my opinion starts and ends with Florida State quarterback Everett Golson. Boston Colleges defense is going to make it difficult on running back Dalvin Cook (422 rush yards, 5 touchdowns) and the Seminoles rushing attack. More importantly I imagine the Eagles defense will also get a decent amount of pressure on Golson as well.

Therefore this game really comes down to Golsons ability to make throws down the field. The Notre Dame senior transfer has been pretty solid hitting 64.7% passing for 5 touchdowns with 465 total yards through the air. I believe Florida State receivers Jesus Wilson and Travis Rudolph have the advantage on the edges. However their advantage will not be exposed if Golson cannot stand up to the pressure and hit his passes down the field. I do not think the Seminoles can rack up a ton of yards on the ground which means Golson has to play well for the Seminoles to escape on Friday.

Jay’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: I like Boston College in this spot. Not only do I think they can score the upset but I like the fact I am getting 7.5 points against a team that has been awful against the number for the last two seasons. Take Boston College +7.5
