LSU Tigers at Kentucky Wildcats

No. 10 LSU is a 9.5-point road favorite over Kentucky with a total of 52.5. My play is the Wildcats getting the points.
Kentucky has been one of the best bets in college football. The Wildcats are 4-1 against the spread in Will Stein’s first season, and LSU is 2-3. Kentucky just pulled off the biggest road comeback in program history. It trailed South Carolina 17-0, forced overtime with a field goal in the closing seconds, and won 35-34 on a two-point conversion. A team that doesn’t quit plays well as a home underdog in prime time.
Kentucky finishes drives. The Wildcats have made 21 trips inside the 20 this season and come away with 16 touchdowns and three field goals, one of the best red-zone marks in the SEC. CJ Baxter and Jason Patterson give Kenny Minchey a two-back rushing attack that can grind out drives. Against a defense as good as LSU’s, turning red-zone trips into touchdowns is how an underdog stays close.
LSU’s defense is the toughest test Kentucky will see. The Tigers allow 3.90 yards per play, second in the nation behind Georgia, and Princewill Umanmielen leads the SEC with eight sacks. LSU allows 15.2 points per game, and Lane Kiffin’s offense averages 43.6. The Tigers beat Texas A&M by 29. But a defense this good tends to keep games lower-scoring, and fewer possessions make a 9.5-point spread harder to cover.
The risk is Kentucky’s defense. The Wildcats allow 26.8 points per game, which ranks 101st nationally. Alabama beat them 45-17, and South Carolina jumped out to a 17-0 lead last week. If LSU’s offense gets rolling early, this one could get away fast. But Kentucky has shown it can stay in games when it falls behind, and the hook on 9.5 keeps a one-score or 10-point type of game working in its favor. Take the points at home.
