Over/Under Total: 63.5

The Alabama Crimson Tide cruised to another easy victory last week by stomping Tennessee 48-17. By all accounts, it was an impressive performance on both sides of the football. The Crimson Tide offense racked up nearly 600 yards of total offense, and the defense consistently frustrated the Volunteers allowing just 302 yards of total offense. Despite the complete performance, Alabama may have exited the game with a loss in many ways. Star junior WR Jaylen Waddle suffered a fractured ankle in the opening kickoff against Tennessee, and his season is officially over after successful surgery to repair the damage.

While Alabama still has plenty of talent on offense, the loss of Waddle greatly hurts their long-term goals towards competing with the nation’s elite for another National Championship. Fortunately, Alabama has some time to figure things out as the remaining schedule looks fairly manageable. This week the Crimson Tide will have the luxury of hosting the Mississippi State Bulldogs, who have lost three straight games since their season-opening victory over LSU. Alabama will be substantial 32 point favorites as they seek their 3rd straight cover against the number.

Alabama continues to flex against unranked teams

In last week’s win against Tennessee, Alabama proved yet again why they are such an elite force under Nick Saban. QB Mac Jones set a school record with 19 straight completions, and once again, I will just say that I have been extremely impressed with his performance. With Jones performing at a high-level along with running back Najee Harris in the running game, Alabama is a fully threatening offense that can move the football at will. Perhaps even more impressive is what Alabama has been able to accomplish against inferior opponents. Under Nick Saban, the Crimson Tide have won 94 straight games against unranked opponents. Once thought to be a run-heavy/defensive offense, the Crimson Tide have now scored at least 35 points in 18 straight games. Both of those stats are NCAA FBS records and shows how Alabama rarely has letdown performances.

Admittedly, I am not the biggest Alabama fan. However, I do have enormous respect for Saban’s ability to evolve into an explosive offense, which is required in today’s college football landscape among the nation’s elite. The problem that Mississippi State faces this week is that they must find a way to score points against this elite scoring threat to keep things respectable. So far, the Bulldogs have been awful on the offensive side of the football, scoring just 30 points in the last three games combined. Simply put, the Bulldogs are not tricky to strategize against. They have an awful offensive line and running game. QB K.J Costello has been under fire and plagued by turnovers with ten interceptions through the first four games. I cannot imagine many scenarios where this Bulldogs offense gets on track this weekend. I believe Alabama will bring pressure, and their speed on defense will present significant problems. All we need here is another low scoring output from the Bulldogs and Alabama to keep their streak of huge performances on offense to continue. I’m betting on it at least for another week as the match-up is too good to pass up.
