Last week, I encouraged bettors to fade the top-ranked Clemson Tigers amidst a historic 46 point betting spread against the Syracuse Orange. With an impressive 1st half effort from Syracuse, the Orange easily covered the spread despite a 47-21 loss. This week the top-ranked Tigers return for another homestand with another lofty 31 point spread when they host the Boston College Eagles at Memorial Stadium. Despite being the undisputed top team in college football, the Tigers are just 2-4 ATS on the year, and they face another difficult betting spread on Saturday.

The Eagles are 4-2 SU and 4-2 ATS on the season, and they have proven to be a tough out for everyone. Boston College has racked up wins over Duke, Texas State, Pittsburgh, and Georgia Tech. The Eagles took No. 12 North Carolina down to the wire in a close defeat. In 6 games this season, the Eagles only failed to be competitive in one contest against Virginia Tech in a 40-14. In that game, the Eagles had their worst performance in recent memory, relinquishing five turnovers to the Hokies. However, they still managed to rack up 435 yards of total offense. Clemson’s biggest problem facing these enormous spreads is that it leaves little room for error. If the Eagles can maintain their ability to compete and score points, it will make the 31 point spread extremely difficult to cover.

RB Travis Etienne closing in on ACC All-Time Rushing Record

If you have read my Clemson coverage this year, I have routinely given praise to running back Travis Etienne as I believe he is the most underrated player in college football. I have also made a few bold predictions that Etienne will have a better career than the consensus No. 1 pick in next year’s NFL Draft in teammate QB Trevor Lawrence that has passed for 1,833 yards for 17 touchdowns and just two picks. As Lawrence continues to get all of the hype, Etienne is closing in on the ACC’s all-time rushing mark. Etienne trails North Carolina State’s Ted Brown by just 42 yards, and there is a strong likelihood that the record will be eclipsed this Saturday.

Etienne recorded three rushing touchdowns in the victory against Syracuse last week, and I imagine with the record hanging in the balance; he will get plenty of work again this weekend. The Eagles have relinquished an ugly amount of yards on the ground this season, including 4.47 yards per opponent’s attempt. I know Clemson’s passing offense is an elite threat with Lawrence behind center, but their best path to a big victory is on the ground. Boston College has only allowed 217 yards per game through the air on defense, and if Clemson chooses to throw the ball 25-30 times, as usual, I expect Boston College’s defense to have more success than most would expect.

Reasons to back Boston College +31 vs. Clemson

I mentioned earlier that Boston College had a meltdown in the loss to Virginia Tech. However, the Eagles have actually protected the ball well in the rest of their games and rank 9th in the FBS in turnovers gained (11). If Boston College can win or simply avoid disasters in the turnover department, I believe their offense is competitive enough to put points on the scoreboard. Syracuse’s inferior offense proved that Clemson is not invincible on defense last week. Boston College QB Phil Jurkovec has been decent, completing 63% passing with 12 touchdowns and four picks. Jurkovec has a pair of talented targets in the passing game in WR Zay Flowers and TE Hunter Long that should give the Eagles the opportunity to keep the chains moving. Just like last week’s match-up with Syracuse, we just need a little help from the Eagles’ offense to feel confident in the points!

Jay’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: Boston College is 4-2 ATS in their last six games and 5-1 ATS in the last six games against ACC opponents. I like the Eagles here due to the generous number being offered for the 2nd week in a row against the top-ranked team in college football. Take Boston College +31.
