Pittsburgh is a 3.5-point home favorite over North Carolina with a total of 47.5. My play is the Under 47.5.

Pittsburgh’s defense is the entry point here. The 5-0 Panthers are allowing just 13.4 points per game, 14th in the country, and they’ve been nearly impossible to run on, giving up only 55.6 rushing yards per game. Pat Narduzzi’s defense held UCF to seven points in a 12-7 win and has been the backbone of an unbeaten start.

That’s a bad matchup for North Carolina’s offense. The Tar Heels average 24.0 points per game and rank 99th nationally in rushing at 135.5 yards per game. Billy Edwards Jr. has been up and down, going 13-of-30 for 135 yards in a 28-20 loss at Clemson. Against a Pitt front that takes away the run, UNC will be forced to throw on obvious passing downs, and that’s where drives stall. Realistic North Carolina output: 14-20 points.

Bill Belichick’s defense has been solid in its own right. UNC allows 19.5 points per game and ranks 30th against the pass, giving up 200.5 yards per game. The Tar Heels held TCU to 10 points in the opener and East Tennessee State to three. Against a Pitt offense that leans on its passing game, a disciplined UNC secondary can keep the Panthers from piling up points.

The honest risk is Pittsburgh’s offense. The Panthers average 38.4 points per game and throw for 316 yards per game, 10th in the country, and their own pass defense ranks 110th. North Carolina also just put up 26 points in a 37-26 loss to Notre Dame, a game that went well over its total. If both passing games get going, this can climb. But Pitt has shown it can win low-scoring games, UNC’s offense struggles to run the ball, and a Pittsburgh team this good on defense controls the pace at home.

Realistic outcomes: Pittsburgh 27, North Carolina 17 (44 total); Pittsburgh 24, North Carolina 17 (41 total); Pittsburgh 28, North Carolina 14 (42 total); or Pittsburgh 34, North Carolina 20 (54 total, over). Three of four scenarios stay under 47.5.
