North Texas Mean Green at Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Tulsa is a 1.5-point home favorite over North Texas with a total of 57.5. My play is the Mean Green getting the points.
The offensive matchup is the entry point here. North Texas ranks 5th nationally in adjusted EPA per play and 3rd in offensive success rate. That’s elite-level offensive production, one of the top attacks in college football. Tayven Jackson has been hot since taking over as quarterback, and the Mean Green’s passing attack — which accounts for 52.49% of their plays — is capable of putting up 30-40+ points against most defenses.
Now compare that to Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane rank 113th in adjusted EPA per play and 90th in offensive success rate. That’s a specific mismatch. In games where a top-5 offense faces a bottom-quarter offense, the higher-scoring team typically wins outright, and the point spread favors the offensive superior team even when the underdog is on the road.
Tulsa’s Week 4 loss to Arkansas (34-6) is worth noting. That was a 28-point loss to a Power Four opponent — the kind of game that exposed real limitations in the Golden Hurricane’s offense. If Tulsa’s offense can’t score more than 6 points against a top-25 SEC defense, how do they score 25+ points against a North Texas defense that ranks in the top 40 nationally?
The historical head-to-head matters too. North Texas beat Tulsa 52-20 at home in September 2024. That was a 32-point margin. Yes, that was at Denton and this game is in Tulsa, but the underlying offensive gap between the programs hasn’t closed. North Texas has a better roster, a better system, and a better quarterback situation. Playing on the road doesn’t change those fundamental advantages.
Multiple experts and analytical models back the Mean Green here. SportsLine’s projection model is going Over on the total and has one side hitting more than 60% of simulations. WagerTalk’s analyst has North Texas +1.5 as the preferred pick. SI’s Ross Kelly has North Texas covering. When multiple independent sources agree on a specific side, that consensus signals meaningful analytical alignment.
The concern is that North Texas is 0-2 on the road this season. But their two road losses were to No. 6 Indiana (a top-5 team) and Texas State (a 49-35 shootout where they still scored 35 points). Those aren’t the profile of a team that gets blown out on the road — they’re profiles of a team that can compete anywhere and still puts up big offensive numbers.
Realistic outcomes: North Texas 34, Tulsa 24 (UNT wins outright); North Texas 31, Tulsa 27 (UNT wins outright); Tulsa 27, North Texas 24 (3-point margin, UNT covers +1.5); or Tulsa 30, North Texas 21 (9-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for North Texas.
The Pick: North Texas Mean Green +1.5
