Oklahoma Sooners at Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia is a 13.5-point home favorite over Oklahoma with a total of 43.5. My play is the Sooners getting the points.
Oklahoma’s defense is the entry point here. Through three weeks, the Sooners are allowing just 8.5 points per game and rank fourth nationally in yards per play allowed at 3.5. That’s elite-level defensive production. Yes, they lost 17-10 to Michigan a couple weeks ago, but consider what happened: they held Michigan — a defensive-oriented team that had beaten Oklahoma to just 17 points on the road. That’s not the profile of a defense that suddenly gets exposed at Georgia. That’s the profile of a defense capable of keeping any game close.
Against a Georgia offense that scored 70 against Western Kentucky and 45 against Arkansas, expect the Sooners to hold the Bulldogs to 24-30 points. Not 42+. Kirby Smart’s offense has been productive against inferior competition, but Oklahoma’s defensive scheme and personnel are legitimate SEC-caliber.
Now consider what happened in the Georgia vs Arkansas game. Georgia won 45-17, a 28-point margin. That was on the road against an unranked opponent. Now they’re being asked to lay 14 at home against a team with a top-4 defense. That’s a step up in competition for the Bulldogs, not a step down. Even elite home teams struggle to cover big spreads against opponents with real defensive capability.
Total dropped significantly too. The total opened at 47.5 and has moved down to 43.5-45.5. That’s Under money reflecting the market’s realization that both defenses will play a role in keeping scoring under control. When totals drop that dramatically before kickoff, it usually signals a defensive-oriented game where the spread should shrink accordingly.
The specific matchup between Oklahoma’s defense and Georgia’s offense should keep things close. Even if Georgia wins, they likely do it 27-17 or 31-20 — margins that cover the spread easily for Oklahoma. Realistic outcomes: Georgia 27, Oklahoma 17 (10-point margin, Oklahoma covers +13.5); Georgia 31, Oklahoma 20 (11-point margin, covers by 2.5); Georgia 24, Oklahoma 14 (10-point margin, covers); or Georgia 38, Oklahoma 17 (21-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for Oklahoma.
Kirby Smart’s coaching approach also matters. Georgia has Alabama coming up on October 10, and Smart will be conservative in the second half if the game is out of hand. He doesn’t run up scores against SEC opponents when playoff implications loom for future games. That coaching pattern consistently produces backdoor covers when Georgia is expected to blow teams out.
The Pick: Oklahoma Sooners +13.5
