College football is officially underway and there is a great slate of games this week starting on Thursday night. One of the games will be the showdown between Tulsa and Oklahoma State. The Cowboys from Oklahoma State come into 2017 with intentions to put up big numbers on offense and compete for a Big 12 Title. Tulsa finished the 2016 season with a 10-3 record and look to improve off that in 2017 and an upset over Okie State would be a huge start.

Thursday nights game opens with Oklahoma State as 18 point favorites over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. The total points for this game is 69.5 combined. The bookmakers expect a high scoring affair and so do I. As of Tuesday afternoon, 67% of the money was on the Cowboys to cover at home. 65% of the action likes the over which tells me they expect both of these teams to score.

Oklahoma State enters 2017 with expectations to have one of the best scoring offenses not only in the Big 12 Conference, but in all of the FBS. Not only does Oklahoma State feel they can score on anyone, there are some that believe they can make a case and be the Big 12 champs. Other than the Oklahoma Sooners, the conference appears to be wide open and a couple of big wins, including one over the Sooners could put the Cowboys in a good position come December. however, as good as Oklahoma State could be in 2017, there is no time to look ahead…first task is to take care of Tulsa.

Tulsa is coming off of a 10-3 season where they finished 2nd place in the American Athletic Conference. They are replacing their quarterback, but overall Tulsa returns a decent amount of talent. In 2016, the Golden Hurricane lost three games, but each loss was acceptable. They lost to Ohio State would made the college football playoff, a very talented and high scoring Houston team, and then a two point loss to a Navy team that gives every opponent trouble with their triple option offense. Tulsa is a good team and they are a team that can sneak up on anyone and anytime. The key to victory or at least to staying competitive in this game is to not allow Oklahoma State to make big plays. If somehow Tulsa can keep this score lower than expected, it could get interesting in prime time on Thursday night.

I keep hearing how great the offense at Oklahoma State will be, but until I see it, I will not believe it. Yes, history shows the guys can score, but I am not about to put this team on such a high pedestal just yet. With that said, I do think the Cowboys will beat Tulsa, but I like Tulsa to at least remain competitive in this one. 18 points are a lot and one thing I have learned over the last few seasons is that on Thursday night games, anything is possible. Oklahoma State will win but it will not be a blow out.
