This Friday night in Wyoming, the Utah State Aggies will travel into War Memorial Stadium to take on the Cowboys. The Aggies come into this game with an overall record of 6-3, and a Mountain West Conference record of 3-1. The Wyoming Cowboys are 2-3 in the Mountain West and 4-5 overall. This is one of those tricky games that are hard to handicap. National TV, night game, two average to below average teams. Anything goes in these types of contests.
The line as we speak in this game has the Utah State Aggies favored on the road by 6.5 points while the over/under is set at 46 total points scored. Both of these teams come in at 4-5 records against the spread. This will be an interesting game to breakdown due to neither team really having a true advantage.
Utah State is favored headed into this game against Wyoming. At 3-1, the Aggies are in second place in the Mountain Division just a half game behind the Colorado State Rams. Utah State has won four of their last five games, including a win over then 18th ranked BYU. Just this past week, the Aggies defeated Hawaii by a 35-14 score. Statistically, Utah State does not come off very flashy. They are ranked 61st in passing yards and 83rd in rushing yards. Not only are the yards themself not very high ranked, but the Aggies are averaging about 27 points per game, which is good for 79th in the country. Utah State is the favorite in this contest, but if they have any desire to get this win, they will need to play some offense. The Cowboys defense is not all that great, but if the Aggies want to cover this 6.5 spread, they need to put up points early to set tone and get the Wyoming fans out of it.
At 4-5 on the season, it is quite evident that Wyoming is not a very strong team. Before winning this past week against Fresno State, they had lost five of six games. Although the Fresno State win was quite impressive, this team has some work to do. The Cowboys major weakness is scoring. Ranked 102nd in FBS, they are only scoring about 22 points per game. Not only does the scoring offense have issues, the defense does as well. Ranked 95th in the nation, the Wyoming Cowboys are allowing opponents to score almost 31 points per game. This game could be very bad for the Cowboys if they do not focus and play a complete game on both sides of the ball. Utah State is a good team, and if Wyoming does not come out prepared, it could be a very long day for the Cowboys.
Bob’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: After seeing what Wyoming did to Fresno State last week, I think a lot of people are gaining a little trust in them. Not me. I still do not think this Wyoming team is good enough, or disciplined enough to have back to back games with such success. I like Utah State to come into this game and dominate from start to finish. I predict a 35-16 win for the Utah State Aggies. PICK UTAH STATE -6.5
