Woodbine Mile Analysis
This year’s Woodbine Mile brings together an international lineup that blends proven Grade 1 class, rising locals, and intriguing invaders, making it one of the most compelling turf races of the season.
The centerpiece is Notable Speech, Godolphin’s brilliant colt trained by Charlie Appleby. Already a multiple Group 1 winner in Europe, he arrives off a narrow defeat in the Jacques Le Marois (G1) and brings the kind of class needed to win these races. Appleby has captured two of the past three runnings of this race, and with William Buick aboard, Notable Speech’s devastating late kick and tactical versatility make him the clear horse to beat.
Local fans will rally behind My Boy Prince, a Mark Casse trainee who has held his own in tough graded company throughout the summer. After sharp efforts sprinting, he’s shown he can stretch his speed and fight on at a mile. With Joel Rosario taking the call, expect him to try and steal the race, and if the course is favoring speed, look out!
Win for the Money has the numbers to post an upset, just as he did last year in this race at 13-1. He’ll sit close to the pacesetters and should be the first to get by My Boy Prince if he brings his A game.
Gas Me Up comes into the race with momentum after a powerful victory in the King Edward Stakes (G2). Trainer Kevin Attard has him in peak form, but he’ll likely need the leaders to soften each other up early and set up his late rally. Wyoming Bill was only beaten by three-quarters of a length by Gas Me Up in the King Edward, and he should also be rallying late at a nice price.
Stanley House offers another price angle. A versatile runner who usually goes longer, he cuts back to a mile after showing tactical speed at 10 furlongs. If he gets comfortable near the front end, he could make an early bid, and his fitness going further might help him when the favorites come charging late.
International intrigue comes in the form of One Stripe, a multiple Group 1 winner in South Africa, now making his North American debut for trainer Graham Motion. He’s fresh off a long layoff, his class looks solid, and Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez has won this race five times. If he brings his overseas form, he has a chance to win, but his short price isn’t enticing.
The race sets up with My Boy Prince on the lead early trying to steal it, followed closely by Stanley House, Hunt Master, and Win for the Money. Next will be Notable Speech and One Stripe, followed by deep closers Wyoming Bill, Naptown, and Gas Me Up.
If My Boy Prince sets a slow pace and manages to shake his early pressers, he will have to be caught first by Win for the Money, with One Stripe and Notable Speech expected to come with strong late rallies.
Notable Speech appears classy enough to catch the lone speed, and any pace pressure benefits him the most. One Stripe is a bit of an unknown despite his classy wins in South Africa, and we’d much rather take a chance on Win For the Money in the place spot at a nice price. We’re hoping My Boy Prince holds on for third, but we’ll also take some small exactas with him first and second with the favourites and in smaller exactas to the board.
In the end, Notable Speech brings world-class credentials, and this year’s Woodbine Mile should be a memorable showdown between class and speed on the road to the Breeders’ Cup.
