The Rams are 3.5-point favorites in Thursday’s international opener. That number opened at 2.5 and drifted to 3.5 over the past week. The interesting part is who’s on each side of this trip.
San Francisco left for Melbourne a full week early. Kyle Shanahan and the front office wanted their players acclimated, adjusted to the 17-hour time difference, and settled in before a snap was played. Seven days on the ground gives you enough time to reset your body clock, get some walkthroughs in at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and treat this like a normal home game with a very long commute.
The Rams? They’re landing about a day before kickoff. Sean McVay’s plan is essentially to fly in, play the game, and fly home. His coaching philosophy has always been that extended road stays disrupt rhythm more than jet lag does. He might be right in a normal city. But this isn’t Boston or Nashville. It’s Australia, and the science on 17-hour flights and time zone shifts is pretty clear: it takes days to recover, and playing football on the second day of a trip halfway around the world has never been done at the NFL regular season level.
Then there’s Stafford’s back.
The reigning MVP comes into this season with some lingering back issues that limited his practice schedule in training camp. First game back from any injury while playing on a different continent, coming off a one-day travel window, at age 38 — that stacks up in a way the market may not be fully pricing.
The 49ers have their own health story, moving the opposite direction. Nick Bosa and George Kittle are both making the trip after missing significant time in 2025. Bosa tore his ACL in Week 3 last year. Kittle tore his Achilles in the wild card win at Philadelphia. Neither is going to be at 100%, and reports suggest Bosa in particular will be worked in slowly. But they’re on the field. And Brock Purdy, who only played 9 games last year because of a toe and shoulder issue, is completely healthy for the first time since Week 1 of 2025.
When Purdy played last year, he was efficient — 2,167 yards and 20 touchdowns in nine games. That’s a starting quarterback playing at a legitimate level. Combine that with a fully committed McCaffrey backfield, Deebo Samuel in the slot, and a Kyle Shanahan gameplan built for exactly this kind of game (methodical, ball-control, clock-eating), and the 49ers have a real formula to keep this within a field goal.
The Rams’ roster is loaded on paper. Stafford, Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, Myles Garrett, Aaron Donald back from retirement, Trent McDuffie, and enough offensive weapons to score on anyone when they’re right. The problem is being right in Week 1 in Melbourne with your quarterback coming off a back injury and one day of on-ground preparation.
3.5 in a game like this is more than it looks. Any close game — Rams win by 3, or 49ers keep it inside a touchdown — cashes the ticket.
