Saturday afternoon’s preseason opener at Soldier Field has one of the most interesting line movements on the entire Week 1 board, and once you understand why it’s moved, the spread play becomes clear.
The Browns are laying 1.5 with a total of 38.5. But this game opened at Bears -1.5. It’s flipped a full three points, all the way to Browns -1.5. That’s a massive move in a preseason game, and it demands a closer look. Even more telling is the juice attached to the current line. According to ESPN’s odds page, Cleveland -1.5 is available at +110 while Bears +1.5 requires you to lay -130. That’s expensive juice on a preseason home dog, and it tells you exactly where the sharp money has been going. When professional bettors are willing to pay -130 to grab a hook and a half at home in preseason, they’re seeing something.
Here’s what they’re seeing.
Todd Monken is making his NFL head coaching debut on Saturday. Cleveland hired him on January 28 after firing Kevin Stefanski, and it’s Monken’s first NFL head coaching job — his last head coaching role was at Southern Miss from 2013 to 2015. He spent the last three seasons as the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator under John Harbaugh and was widely considered the offensive-minded hire the Browns needed to salvage a unit that ranked dead last in the NFL in scoring for two straight seasons at just 15.8 points per game.
First-year NFL head coaches in their preseason debut are unpredictable, and Monken is walking into a difficult situation. Deshaun Watson is starting the game, according to reporting out of Browns camp. Watson hasn’t played a competitive NFL snap since October 2024, when he tore his Achilles. He missed the entire 2025 season rehabbing. This is his first live game action in nearly two years, and Cleveland’s offensive line and receivers are being asked to protect and support a quarterback who’s been off the field for that long.
On the other sideline, Ben Johnson is in year two with the Bears, and continuity matters in preseason more than casual observers realize. Johnson has one full offseason of installing his scheme, one full preseason of practice reps with Caleb Williams, and a starting quarterback who’s now in his third NFL season. Year-two coaches with returning starters have a real edge over year-one coaches in the first week of preseason, when everything is about execution and roster evaluation.
Speaking of Caleb Williams, he almost certainly won’t play much in this game. That’s fine. Bears offensive coaches have built up the offense during camp, and even when Williams sits, the guys running the second-team offense have been in this system for the better part of a full year. That’s a significant advantage when Cleveland is running out a rebuilt roster with a new coaching staff.
There’s one more thing worth flagging. The Browns’ 2025 offensive numbers were historically bad. Beyond the last-place scoring rank, their 61.9% catch rate was the lowest in the entire NFL. Even with Monken bringing his offensive expertise from Baltimore, and even with Watson trying to reset his career, this is going to be an offense finding its footing on the fly. Bears defense — which led the NFL with 33 takeaways in 2025 — is a bad matchup for an offense trying to find rhythm.
I looked at the total too. It moved from 38.5 open to as high as 39.5 at FanDuel, but there’s a case for the Under given both teams’ preseason approaches. The side is where I see the clearest edge, though. Sharp money has been on the Bears since the line moved, and the situational reasons for that movement all hold up.
