San Francisco is an 8.5-point home favorite over Arizona with a total of 47.5. My play is the Under.

The Cardinals’ Week 2 performance is the entry point here. Arizona got destroyed 31-7 by Seattle at home — their offense scored just 7 points against a defense that isn’t at San Francisco’s level. That’s the specific offensive ceiling Arizona has when they can’t get their run game going and their passing attack breaks down. Jacoby Brissett couldn’t move the ball, the run game stalled, and the Cardinals looked completely overwhelmed. That’s not a team that suddenly puts up 24+ points against San Francisco’s defense.

Against San Francisco’s defense — which ranks first in EPA/Play through two weeks and features an elite front seven — Arizona’s offensive ceiling caps at 17-20 points. Realistically, they’ll score 13-17 against the 49ers. That’s a hard cap on the total from one side of the ball.

San Francisco’s own scoring output has been dominant. They put up 27 against the Rams in Melbourne and 35 against the Dolphins. But those numbers came against specific matchups. Against a Cardinals defense that has been solid at limiting explosive plays (even in the loss to Seattle, they held Seattle to 31), the 49ers will hit 24-28 points rather than 35+.

Kyle Shanahan is also known for game management in blowouts. With Arizona limited offensively, San Francisco can build a 21-3 lead by halftime and coast to a comfortable win without needing to run up the score. Christian McCaffrey and the running game take over in the second half, tempo slows, and the total suppresses rather than builds.

The prediction models support this. Multiple models project the final score around 27-17 or 28-17 — total of 44-45 points. Both fall comfortably under 47.5. Dimers has the 49ers winning 27-18 (45 total). Cappers Picks AI has the 49ers winning 28-17 (45 total). The market total of 47.5 is 2-3 points above what these models project.

The 49ers’ 6-2 SU record in the last eight meetings vs Arizona also matters. Five of those wins were by 16+ points — meaning San Francisco has been rolling the Cardinals when they play, but the specific games they’ve won by margins that would push over totals happen when Arizona’s offense produces. When Arizona’s offense is limited (like it was in Week 2), the resulting games stay lower-scoring.

Realistic outcomes: 49ers 27, Cardinals 17 (44 total); 49ers 28, Cardinals 14 (42 total); 49ers 24, Cardinals 20 (44 total); or 49ers 31, Cardinals 17 (48 total, over by 0.5). Three of four scenarios stay under 47.5. Only if San Francisco decides to run up the score does the total push over, and Shanahan’s coaching profile in comfortable wins doesn’t support that outcome.

The Pick: Cardinals/49ers Under 47.5
