Kansas City is a 10.5-point road favorite over Miami with a total of 45.5. My play is the Under.

The Dolphins’ offensive struggles are the entry point here. Miami has scored exactly 13 points in each of their first two games. Malik Willis has been unable to move the ball consistently, the running game hasn’t produced sustained drives, and the receiving corps hasn’t created explosive plays. That’s a Dolphins offense with a hard ceiling of about 14-17 points against average competition. Against the Chiefs’ defense — which just held Denver to 10 points in Week 1 and Indianapolis to 30 in Week 2 (with the Colts scoring 21 in the fourth quarter of a game already decided) — Miami will struggle to hit even 14 points.

Realistically, the Dolphins are looking at 10-14 points in this game. That’s not pessimism — that’s the actual offensive production ceiling based on what they’ve shown through two weeks. When one side of the matchup has such a defined scoring cap, the total becomes much more about the Chiefs’ output than about the sum of both teams’ scoring.

Kansas City’s ceiling matters here too. The Chiefs put up 31 against Denver in Week 1 (41 total, under most sportsbook totals). Their Week 2 game against Indianapolis was 63 total, but that was inflated by the Colts’ aggressive fourth-quarter comeback attempt when the outcome was already decided. In games where the Chiefs are in control from start to finish, Andy Reid’s teams tend to score in the mid-to-high 20s and grind out clock rather than piling up explosive drives.

Add in the schedule context. Kansas City has Baltimore coming up on October 4 — a top-5 matchup with real playoff implications. Reid will manage this game to win, not to run up the score. If the Chiefs build a 24-10 lead by halftime (which is very achievable), the third and fourth quarters become about ball control and clock management. Backup running backs get carries, tempo slows, and the resulting margin caps at 14-17 points.

The Chiefs total is likely 24-31, and the Dolphins total is likely 10-17. Combined output range: 34-48 points. The current 45.5 total falls squarely in the middle of that range, meaning most realistic outcomes stay under.

Realistic outcomes: Chiefs 28, Dolphins 14 (42 total); Chiefs 27, Dolphins 13 (40 total); Chiefs 31, Dolphins 17 (48 total, over by 2.5); or Chiefs 34, Dolphins 13 (47 total, over by 1.5). Two of four stay under 45.5, but the specific game script (Chiefs winning by 14 with clock management) points to the low-40s range being most likely.

Even prediction models are pointing to a low-scoring affair with Kansas City winning by roughly 14 points and the total landing in the low 40s.

The Pick: Chiefs/Dolphins Under 45.5
