New York Jets at Detroit Lions

Detroit is a 6.5-point home favorite over the Jets with a total of 48.5. My play is the Jets getting the points.
The Jets’ defensive profile is the entry point here. New York’s defense is allowing just 4.0 yards per play — third-best in the entire NFL. They rank sixth in EPA per defensive play at -0.21. Those are elite defensive numbers. In Week 2, they held Green Bay to just 199 total yards. They blew a lead in overtime in that game, but the defensive performance was legitimate and dominant.
Against a Lions offense that has real weapons (Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta), the Jets defensive scheme will be tested. But 4.0 yards per play means Detroit’s offense won’t be moving the ball at will. The Lions are also 0-2 both straight up and against the spread this season. That’s not a team that’s been executing at the level required to blow out opponents by two touchdowns.
The Lions’ ATS profile is worrying for laying 6.5. Detroit has covered the spread just twice in their last 10 games. That’s an ATS covering rate of 20% — one of the worst in the league. And the 0-2 ATS record this season includes losses to teams they were favored against. When a favorite has that kind of covering rate, laying nearly a touchdown becomes very risky.
The Jets have been the opposite. They’re 2-0 ATS this season and playing at a higher level than the market was pricing in. Their Week 1 win over Tennessee was dominant, and their Week 2 game against Green Bay showed they can compete with playoff-caliber teams. Aaron Glenn has this program playing tough, disciplined football that consistently produces close games and covers.
The line movement supports the play too. The spread opened at Lions -9.5 and has moved to -6.5. That’s a full 3-point swing toward the Jets — sharp money identifying the specific value of getting points with a defensive-minded team against a Detroit offense that hasn’t clicked. The market has already been correcting toward the Jets, and the current 6.5 is a much better number than what Detroit has been able to consistently cover this season.
Realistic outcomes: Lions 24, Jets 20 (4-point margin, Jets cover +6.5); Lions 27, Jets 24 (3-point margin, Jets cover); Lions 30, Jets 24 (6-point margin, Jets cover by 0.5); or Lions 34, Jets 20 (14-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for New York.
The Under 48.5 is also live given the Jets’ defensive profile, but the side offers cleaner value with the specific line movement and ATS trend supporting it.
The Pick: New York Jets +6.5
