Detroit is a 3.5-point road favorite over Carolina on Sunday Night Football with a total of 50.5. My play is the Over.

Detroit’s games are the entry point here. The Lions are 2-1, they’ve scored at least 30 points in all three games, and they’ve allowed at least 24 in each one. The Over is 3-0 in Lions games this season, including last week’s 31-24 win over the Jets. Detroit ranks seventh in the NFL in offensive EPA per play and 30th on defense. That’s an offense that scores and a defense that gives points back, every week.

Both secondaries are banged up. Detroit is still without safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, both on the PUP list, which leaves a thin back end. Carolina will be without top cornerback Jaycee Horn, and Nick Scott and Mike Jackson are questionable. Against Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, a Panthers secondary missing Horn is in for a long night. On the other side, Bryce Young gets a Lions defense that has given up 24-plus points in every game.

Carolina’s offense has shown it can put up points. The Panthers scored 37 in a Week 1 shootout loss to Chicago and 34 in a Week 2 win over Atlanta. Last week’s 21-18 loss in Cleveland was a step back on the scoreboard, but Carolina outgained the Browns 360-259 and kept itself out of the end zone with a 4-of-15 day on third down and seven penalties. Young threw it 48 times for 262 yards and spread the ball to 10 different receivers, and Chuba Hubbard ran for 82 yards. That’s an offense that moved the ball and stalled, and against a Lions defense ranked 30th in EPA, those drives should finish in the end zone more often.

The honest risk is Carolina’s injury list on offense. Running back Jonathon Brooks is out, and receivers Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette are questionable along with guard Damien Lewis (doubtful). If the Panthers are shorthanded at receiver, Detroit could carry the scoring load. But the Lions have hit 30 every week, and the Panthers have topped 30 twice in three games. Detroit putting up 28-31 and Carolina getting to the low-to-mid 20s is enough to clear 50.5.

Realistic outcomes: Lions 30, Panthers 24 (54 total); Lions 27, Panthers 24 (51 total); Lions 34, Panthers 21 (55 total); or Lions 24, Panthers 20 (44 total, under). Three of four scenarios go over 50.5.
