Saturday’s late afternoon game at Arrowhead is one of the easier Unders to identify on the entire Week 1 preseason board, and it’s the head coach of the home team who’s telling us exactly why.
The Chiefs are laying 2.5 at home with a total of 36.5. The spread has moved from Chiefs -1.5 at open to Chiefs -2.5 currently, and the total has dropped a full two points from 38.5 to 36.5. Both directions of the line movement are telling the same story, and that story got confirmed by Andy Reid at a press conference on August 10.
Here’s what Reid said when asked about facing the Rams in preseason and then again in the regular season: “They’re not going to play anybody. And so — and we’ll be very vanilla, too. That’s kind of how it is.”
That’s the head coach of the home team, on the record, four days before the game, telling everyone that both teams are going to run vanilla playcalling with backups. You don’t get much cleaner intel than that in preseason football.
The personnel situation backs him up.
Patrick Mahomes is not playing. He’s still working his way back from the ACL and LCL injury that ended his 2025 season in Week 15. There was never any real chance he was going to see live game reps in a Week 1 preseason opener, and that’s been the plan since minicamp. Whichever backup takes the majority of the reps — likely Garrett Nussmeier based on training camp reporting — is going to be running vanilla Andy Reid concepts designed to evaluate roster spots, not attack a Rams defense.
Matthew Stafford is not playing either. Reigning MVP Stafford is being rested by Sean McVay, who has historically been one of the most conservative preseason coaches in football. McVay’s career preseason totals record sits at 10-16-1 to the Under, a 61.5% Under hit rate over his nine seasons with the Rams. That’s the strongest Under-leaning coaching tendency in the entire league. When you combine McVay’s approach with the fact that his MVP quarterback isn’t seeing the field, you know the Rams offense isn’t going to be pushing tempo or attacking downfield.
There’s another layer worth mentioning. The Rams have a joint practice with the Saints scheduled for August 20, which is five days after this game. McVay has publicly said in past years that he values joint practices more than preseason games because they’re controlled environments where he can play his starters. Knowing that a joint practice is coming just around the corner, there’s zero incentive for the Rams to push any of their key players in the Kansas City game.
Add in the temperature — it’s going to be 96 degrees in Kansas City on Saturday afternoon — and even the backup skill players are going to be limited on how many extended series they can run in the heat.
The line movement from 38.5 to 36.5 tells you sharp money has been on this Under since the moment Reid’s press conference hit the wire. When a total drops that much in preseason and a coach publicly confirms both teams will play vanilla, you don’t need to overthink it.
I looked at the side too. Chiefs -2.5 at home with a healthy Reid preseason ATS record could be argued, but Reid has one of the worst preseason ATS records in the league at 36-43-1 across his career, and preseason spreads with backup QBs on both sides flip on every possession. The total is where the certainty lives.
