Seattle is a 6.5-point road favorite over Washington with a total of 40.5. My play is the Under.

The Jayden Daniels injury is the entry point here. The Commanders’ starting quarterback is out for Sunday, meaning Marcus Mariota takes over as the starting quarterback. That’s a significant downgrade at the position, and it directly limits Washington’s offensive ceiling. Mariota has been an NFL backup for multiple years, and while he’s a competent game manager, he’s not going to push the ball downfield or manufacture explosive plays the way Daniels can.

The historical impact of Daniels missing games is substantial. Washington is 3-7 over the last three seasons when Daniels doesn’t play. That’s a significant reduction in the Commanders’ effective performance level. In games without their star quarterback, the offense stalls, drives don’t sustain, and the resulting games produce fewer points on both sides of the ball.

Consider what happens when Washington’s offense is limited. They can’t sustain drives. They can’t put up points. That means fewer opportunities for the Seahawks defense to face pressure, and the game gets shorter on the offensive side. Seattle’s defense — anchored by an aggressive scheme under Mike Macdonald — has real ability to force turnovers and create short fields. But short fields produce field goals, not touchdown drives, and the total drops rather than climbs.

Seattle’s own offensive limitations are worth noting. The Seahawks scored only 13 points in Week 1 vs New England. That was a 13-10 win where Seattle’s offense couldn’t get out of its own way. Whether Sam Darnold is fully healthy or not (he missed time with a glute injury), the Seahawks aren’t going to run up scores. They win with defense and clock management, not with explosive offensive drives.

Two defensively-oriented teams playing each other with a compromised opposing offense creates a specific game script: short drives, punts, field position battles, and games decided by field goals. That’s the exact profile that produces Unders. The total dropped from 41.5 to 40.5, which is Under money coming in.

Realistic outcomes: Seahawks 20, Commanders 13 (33 total); Seahawks 24, Commanders 17 (41 total, over by 0.5); Seahawks 20, Commanders 10 (30 total); or Seahawks 27, Commanders 13 (40 total). Three of four scenarios stay under 40.5. The fourth scenario requires both offenses to produce more than expected, which contradicts the Daniels absence and Seattle’s own offensive struggles.

Even prediction models are pointing to a low-scoring affair — Dimers projects the final score at 22-18, exactly 40 total points.

The Pick: Seahawks/Commanders Under 40.5
