Houston is a 2.5-point road favorite over Indianapolis with a total of 43.5. My play is the Over.

The Colts’ defense is the entry point here. Through two weeks, Indianapolis is allowing 514 total yards per game — the worst mark in the entire NFL by a full 60 yards. They’re giving up 37 points per game (also worst in the NFL) and their red-zone defense is coughing up touchdowns 67% of the time. That’s a defense in complete disarray. Against C.J. Stroud, who threw for 353 yards in Week 2 despite scoring only 6 points, Houston should have opportunities to sustain drives and finish possessions in the end zone.

Head-to-head history supports the Over as well. These teams played twice last year, and Texans won 20-16 and 38-30. That 38-30 game finished with 68 total points — well over any reasonable Week 3 total. The rosters have some changes, but the specific stylistic factors that produced high-scoring games between these teams haven’t disappeared. Both teams have real offensive weapons, both have defensive vulnerabilities, and both are desperate for a win.

Indianapolis’s offense hasn’t been slouches either. They scored 30 points against Kansas City in Week 2 and 23 against Baltimore in Week 1 — that’s 53 points across two games against elite defenses. Against Houston’s defense that has real questions (they gave up 36 to Buffalo and 20 to Cincinnati), the Colts should be able to hit 21-24 points at minimum.

The total dropped from 45.5 at open down to 43.5 — a 2-point Under move that’s actually working in the Over bettor’s favor now. The market has adjusted for both teams’ offensive struggles in specific spots (Houston’s 6 points against Cincinnati was ugly, Colts’ late-game defensive collapses cost them games), but the fundamental offensive matchup still points to a high-scoring game.

The Colts have gone Over in both of their games this season. Games against the Colts consistently produce high totals because their defense simply can’t stop opposing offenses from moving the ball. That trend combined with Houston’s offensive capability creates the exact profile that produces Overs.

Daniel Jones is nine months post-Achilles surgery but he’s throwing effectively and has real weapons at receiver. Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, and the Colts’ passing game will produce points against a Houston defense that has been solid but not dominant.

Realistic outcomes: Texans 28, Colts 21 (49 total); Texans 24, Colts 24 (48 total); Colts 27, Texans 24 (51 total); or Texans 20, Colts 17 (37 total, under). Three of four scenarios push the Over. The one Under scenario requires both offenses to be stopped completely, which contradicts what both offenses have shown they can do in specific matchups.

The Pick: Texans/Colts Over 43.5
