Minnesota is a 2.5-point road favorite over Tampa Bay with a total of 42.5. My play is the Under.

The Vikings’ defense is the entry point here. Through two games, Minnesota’s defense is allowing just 12.5 points per game — one of the best marks in the NFL. Their red-zone defense has been historically dominant, allowing a touchdown on just 12% of opponent trips inside the 20-yard line. That’s the best red-zone defensive rate in the league by a wide margin. Against a Baker Mayfield-led Tampa Bay offense that has struggled to sustain drives and finish possessions, the Vikings’ defensive scheme will produce stalled drives, field goal attempts, and turnovers rather than allowing touchdowns.

The Vikings’ Week 2 game against Chicago was a 9-3 win. That’s a combined 12 points in a Bears/Vikings NFC North matchup. The Vikings played defense-first, controlled the clock, and won ugly. That’s the identity Kevin O’Connell has built, and it doesn’t change against a Tampa Bay offense that’s been just as inconsistent as Chicago’s has been.

Baker Mayfield’s Week 1 loss was 31-27 — a game where the Bengals scored on multiple turnovers. His Week 2 loss was worse, and Mayfield hasn’t been able to find rhythm through two weeks. Against the Vikings’ pressure defense (they blitzed at the league’s highest rate in 2025 and continue to send blitzers in 2026), Mayfield will face constant harassment. That translates to sacks, hurried throws, and interceptions — all of which suppress total points.

Kyler Murray returns for Minnesota after clearing concussion protocol. That’s a slight offensive boost, but Murray isn’t going to suddenly turn the Vikings into a 30-point offense. His return means better ball security than Wentz provided, but the Vikings’ offensive identity remains ball-control and clock management. Realistically, Murray produces 17-21 points against a Tampa Bay defense that’s been solid despite the losses.

The Under trends support the play. Under is 8-2 in the Vikings’ last 10 games. Under is 4-3 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams. Multiple prediction models — including the Star Tribune’s projection of Vikings 23-17 and Dimers’ projection of Vikings 22-20 — put the total at 40-42 points. Both fall comfortably under 42.5.

Even the Baker Mayfield offensive ceiling caps at 20 points against this Vikings defense. And Kyler Murray’s ceiling against a Bucs defense that’s been reasonable is 21-24. Combined, that’s 39-46 total points — with most realistic outcomes closer to 40-43.

Realistic outcomes: Vikings 23, Buccaneers 17 (40 total); Vikings 20, Buccaneers 17 (37 total); Vikings 21, Buccaneers 17 (38 total); or Vikings 24, Buccaneers 20 (44 total, over by 1.5). Three of four scenarios stay under 42.5. Only if both offenses have breakout performances does the total push over, and neither team has shown the ability to produce those breakouts through two weeks.

The Pick: Vikings/Buccaneers Under 42.5
