What Did We Learn From Last Weekend?
The All-Star Race was one for the books. In the opening laps, Ryan Preece’s car was nearly engulfed in flames at the rear, with Preece luckily climbing out after a hard hit. The race was chaotic from the start, as Kyle Larson and Todd Gilliland were involved with Preece and ultimately six other cars at the back of the field after just one completed lap.
Later in the stage, with just 14 laps to go, Carson Hocevar suffered a flat right-front tire and slammed into the wall in Turn 3. Another caution followed due to debris, opening the door for quick pit strategy throughout the field. The race format was also different this year, with the first and second segments running 75 laps each and the final segment stretching 200 laps with a mandatory caution at lap 75.
Tire strategy became a major factor throughout the race, with heavy wear on right-front tires visible on most cars. Riley Herbst battled a loose car, likely related to tire wear, and stage one ended with damage to multiple cars. Chase Elliott suffered catastrophic damage that ultimately ended his race early.
Bubba Wallace won the first stage under caution. Stage two settled down considerably, as drivers realized the importance of preserving their cars for the $1 million prize. Still, incidents continued involving Brad Keselowski, Ross Chastain, Bubba Wallace, Shane Van Gisbergen, and Ty Gibbs.
Ultimately, Denny Hamlin dominated the latter stages of the event, leading an impressive 103 laps. Chase Briscoe also showed speed, leading 61 laps, but Hamlin simply had the fastest car. Erik Jones finished third, followed by Austin Dillon and Connor Zilisch to round out the top five.
Where Are We Headed This Weekend?
This Memorial Day weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series returns to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600, one of the crown jewel events on the NASCAR calendar. Much like the Daytona 500 or the Southern 500 at Darlington, the Coke 600 brings massive expectations and an electric atmosphere.
As the longest race of the season, the Coca-Cola 600 tests both driver stamina and team strategy over 600 miles of racing. Charlotte Motor Speedway first opened in 1960 and remains one of NASCAR’s most iconic intermediate tracks.
The 1.5-mile asphalt quad-oval features 24 degrees of banking in the turns and five degrees on the straightaways, allowing drivers to maintain high speeds while carrying momentum through the corners with minimal braking.
Tire wear will once again be a key storyline, especially with long green-flag runs and changing track temperatures as the race transitions from daytime into night conditions. Track position and clean air are expected to play major roles throughout the evening.
Odds and Value Picks
When it comes to picking a winner at Charlotte, recent years have produced unconventional finishes and a variety of winners. Still, drivers who traditionally dominate intermediate tracks remain difficult to ignore. Current NASCAR betting odds are available at Bovada.
Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin, and Joey Logano all have strong histories at Charlotte, combining for wins and numerous top-five finishes. Jimmie Johnson still holds the all-time record with eight victories at the track.
Winner: Tyler Reddick (+400)
Are you tired of hearing his name yet? Tyler Reddick continues to show race-winning speed nearly every weekend, including several dominant stretches during the All-Star Race.
Reddick may not yet own a victory at Charlotte, but he enters the weekend with the best average finish among active drivers in his seven career starts here, along with two top-five finishes and five top-10s.
With the momentum he has built throughout the season, look for Reddick to aggressively chase his first career Coca-Cola 600 victory.
Mid-Range Pick: Brad Keselowski (+10000)
RFK Racing continues to show flashes of major upside, and Brad Keselowski appears close to breaking through. Charlotte has historically been one of his better tracks, with two wins and seven top-five finishes in 26 career starts.
If strategy and execution fall into place, Keselowski has the speed necessary to contend for victory lane.
Dark Horse: AJ Allmendinger (+50000)
AJ Allmendinger brought plenty of aggression and speed to the All-Star Race and now heads to a Charlotte track that could suit him well again.
With a top-five finish in one of his last two starts at Charlotte, Allmendinger will look to build off the momentum from a strong Dover performance and potentially surprise the field.
Points Picture Heading Into Charlotte
Most of the drivers highlighted above are still chasing points ground heading into Charlotte, with Tyler Reddick continuing to separate himself near the top of the standings.
