Saturday afternoon’s early game at MetLife Stadium has one of the most interesting totals on the entire Week 1 preseason board, and the news that broke Tuesday only strengthens the case for the Over.
The Vikings are laying 1.5 with a total of 41.5. The spread has been dead flat — opened at Vikings -1.5, sitting at Vikings -1.5 as we get closer to kickoff. But look at the total. This game opened at 38.5 and has been bet up a full three points to 41.5. In preseason football, where totals typically stay locked in a narrow band, a 3-point Over move is significant. Someone likes points in this one, and the storylines back it up.
Let’s start with the news out of Minnesota.
On Tuesday, August 12, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell officially named Kyler Murray the team’s starting quarterback for the 2026 season, ending a training camp competition with J.J. McCarthy. Murray, the former No. 1 overall pick released by Arizona in March, signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with Minnesota and split first-team reps with McCarthy throughout the spring and the first two weeks of camp. Now the job is his.
The timing here matters for the preseason opener. O’Connell told reporters he made the decision specifically before Saturday’s game against the Giants to allow Murray to get full first-team reps in the preseason. That means Kyler Murray is going to be on the field Saturday running the Vikings’ starting offense, throwing to Justin Jefferson, in what is essentially his first meaningful action with his new team. Newly-named starting quarterbacks in preseason openers with something to prove don’t sit for a single series and go home. Murray needs the reps. He needs the chemistry with Jefferson. He needs the timing with the offensive line. This is a live audition for the guy who’s trying to reset his career in Minnesota.
On the other sideline, John Harbaugh is making his New York Giants debut. After 18 seasons and a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens, Harbaugh was hired on January 20, 2026 to take over Big Blue. This is his first NFL game with a new organization since 2008. Coaches at this stage of their career, taking on a new challenge after nearly two decades in one place, don’t approach the preseason opener the way most head coaches do. Harbaugh said at his introductory press conference that he wanted the Giants job specifically because it was “the biggest stage in the biggest sport.” He came here to make noise, and he’s going to want his debut to look like a real football game rather than a scrimmage.
The staff he’s assembled tells you the same thing. Matt Nagy is his offensive coordinator, and Nagy was the 2018 AP Coach of the Year with the Bears. Brian Callahan is the quarterbacks coach, hired specifically to develop second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart after Callahan spent last season as head coach of the Tennessee Titans. When your position coach at quarterback was recently a head coach himself, you’re not treating the preseason as pure evaluation.
Jaxson Dart is confirmed as the Giants’ starting quarterback for 2026. He got a full offseason under Harbaugh’s new staff, and he’s going to want to look sharp in his first game with the guys who were hired specifically to build the offense around him. Dart’s playing style fits well with designed rollouts, RPOs, and improvised plays — the kind of dynamic offense that generates points in preseason football.
So we’ve got Kyler Murray in his first game as the Vikings’ named starter, playing meaningful snaps and looking to build chemistry with Justin Jefferson. We’ve got Jaxson Dart in Harbaugh’s debut, running an offense built specifically for him under a highly regarded new staff. Both starting quarterbacks have real reasons to play offensive football. Both head coaches have real reasons to want a game with rhythm and points.
I looked at the side too. Vikings -1.5 is fine as a preseason play if you believe Murray steadies quickly with first-team reps, but the total is where the market has been moving and where the situational factors line up cleanest.
