Friday night’s preseason finale at Hard Rock Stadium has one of the cleanest handicapping setups of the entire Week 3 slate, and the value is on the road team laying the number.

The Falcons are 3.5-point road favorites over the Dolphins with a total of 36.5. This game opened with Atlanta as a 3-point favorite, and sharp money has moved the number a half-point further toward the Falcons. That movement makes sense once you understand the fundamental asymmetry between how these two teams are approaching this game.

Let’s start with the coaching plans.

Kevin Stefanski confirmed on Monday, August 24 that his Falcons starters will play against the Dolphins. That includes Tua Tagovailoa, who will start the game — his first game action against the team that released him in the offseason. Stefanski explained the rationale clearly: because Atlanta held joint practices with the Colts during Week 2 preseason, his starters didn’t get meaningful game reps last week. He wants that game work now, before the regular season opens. This isn’t a hedge or a partial commitment. Stefanski, a two-time AP Coach of the Year during his time in Cleveland, has confirmed his top players will be on the field.

Jeff Hafley, on the other hand, has spent the entire Miami preseason sitting his starters. Malik Willis has taken most of the reps at quarterback, and the Dolphins have been running out backup rotations for the majority of both preseason games. They lost 20-7 to the Commanders in Week 1 and lost again in Week 2. That’s an 0-2 preseason record with backup rotations that haven’t shown they can move the ball consistently, and there’s no indication that Hafley plans to reverse his approach for the finale. If anything, with a completely rebuilt roster full of players trying to make the 53-man cut, Miami’s finale will be another opportunity to evaluate depth.

That’s the asymmetry the market is pricing in. Falcons starters vs. Dolphins backups is a talent mismatch, and the 3.5-point spread reflects that.

Now the revenge factor.

Tua Tagovailoa’s return to Hard Rock Stadium is one of the more emotionally charged storylines of the entire preseason. Miami released him this offseason despite $54 million in guaranteed money on his contract, absorbing $99.2 million in dead cap over the next two seasons — the largest dead cap hit in NFL history. Tagovailoa has spent the summer competing with Michael Penix Jr. for Atlanta’s starting job, and this game is his chance to prove — in front of the exact fans who watched him get released — that he’s still an elite NFL quarterback. Players in revenge spots against former teams don’t play conservative football. They play with edge, with focus, and with something to prove. Tua has all three motivations working for him Friday night.

Kevin Stefanski also knows this. He picked Tua as the starter over Penix precisely because he wants a veteran with elite decision-making leading his offense. And Stefanski’s history with his 2020 and 2023 Cleveland teams shows he knows how to unlock a quarterback’s best performance in high-motivation situations.

The Falcons’ 2025 defensive numbers work in their favor too. Atlanta led the NFL with 13 red zone sacks last year — the most in the entire league. That kind of defensive pressure translates well to preseason games where opposing backup QBs are trying to sustain drives against unfamiliar looks. Miami’s backup rotation is going to have trouble getting into scoring position against a defense that specifically excels at that.

There’s one more layer worth flagging. Miami had what one analyst described as a “massive purge” this offseason, bringing in essentially two draft classes worth of new players with 13 total picks. That kind of roster instability shows up in preseason games where cohesion matters, and the Dolphins have shown it with their 0-2 record and offensive struggles.

The 3.5-point spread is a fair number given the coaching asymmetry, and the movement from -3 to -3.5 tells you sharp bettors have been backing the Falcons since the number opened. Even with Michael Penix’s status uncertain, the Falcons have a clear talent edge for most of the game, especially with Tua playing the extended reps of his tenure with Atlanta.

I looked at the total too. The 36.5 has held steady since open. Miami’s backup QBs haven’t been generating offense in preseason, and even with Falcons starters on the field, Stefanski isn’t going to be running trick plays and deep shots. There’s a case for the Under. But the side has the clearer edge given the confirmed coaching plans.

The Pick: Atlanta Falcons -3.5
