Philadelphia Eagles at Tennessee Titans

Philadelphia is a 7-point road favorite over Tennessee with a total of 40.5. My play is the Under.
The total moved from 42.5 at open all the way down to 40.5. That’s a 2-point drop reflecting Under money on the market side. And when both spread and total move in specific directions before kickoff (spread from -4.5 to -7 favoring Eagles, total down two points), the market is telling us something specific: they expect Philadelphia to control the game defensively while both offenses struggle to produce points.
Cam Ward’s Week 1 performance is the biggest signal here. The Titans’ second-year quarterback threw for just 4.4 yards per attempt in the loss to the Jets, with a 5.3 aDoT (average depth of target) and a 59.4% completion rate. Those are the numbers of a quarterback who couldn’t push the ball downfield, couldn’t sustain drives, and couldn’t manufacture explosive plays. Tennessee finished 22nd in EPA per play against a Jets defense that isn’t at the Eagles’ level.
Now Ward faces Philadelphia’s defensive front. The Eagles pressured Jayden Daniels 16 times in Week 1 without needing to blitz. That’s the exact type of pressure package that destroys young quarterbacks — they can’t rely on blitz identification because Philadelphia is generating pressure with their base four-man rush. Against Ward, who already struggled with short throws and quick decisions last week, that pressure translates to sacks, hurried throws, and turnovers.
The Titans offense’s ceiling in this game is 10-14 points. That’s what Ward is likely to produce against Philadelphia’s pass rush and secondary. If Tennessee scores 10-14 points and Philadelphia scores 20-24, we’re looking at 30-38 total points — well under 40.5.
Now the Eagles’ own offensive concerns. Jalen Hurts and Philadelphia won Week 1, but the offense looked out of sync for stretches. Hurts held a 24-16 lead until the 1:01 mark of the fourth quarter before Washington’s late score cut it close. That’s not the profile of an offense that’s clicking on all cylinders. Sirianni’s team will need time to find their offensive rhythm this year, and against a Titans defense that’s actually solid (Ward’s turnover-fueled offensive struggles distracted from the fact that Tennessee’s defense played reasonably in Week 1), the Eagles won’t run up big numbers early.
Robert Saleh’s coaching approach also supports the Under. Saleh comes from a defensive background — he was San Francisco’s defensive coordinator before his Jets head coaching stint, and defense will be his priority. His Week 1 game plan focused on limiting scoring possessions and controlling clock, and he’ll bring that same approach against a struggling Eagles offense.
Realistic outcomes: Eagles 24, Titans 13 (37 total); Eagles 21, Titans 10 (31 total); Eagles 27, Titans 14 (41 total — over by 0.5); or Eagles 24, Titans 17 (41 total — over by 0.5). Three of four scenarios stay under 40.5, and even the two that push barely creep over. Only a game where both offenses execute at above-average levels goes far over the total, and neither team’s Week 1 performance supports that outcome.
