No. 18 Oklahoma State at No. 20 Houston
Saturday, October 17, 2026
7:30 PM ET, TDECU Stadium, Houston

Houston is a 4.5-point favorite with a total of 62.5. My play is Houston -4.5.

Two of the Big 12’s biggest surprises collide in Houston, and I’m siding with the one that can actually stop the run. Eric Morris rebuilt a 1-11 Oklahoma State team with 91 newcomers, believed to be the most on one roster in major-college history, and the Cowboys arrive ranked and riding a four-game win streak that includes a stunner over then-No. 6 Oregon.

Willie Fritz’s Cougars are 5-1, and he isn’t shy about the ceiling. “We feel like we can compete for a national championship here at the University of Houston,” he said. It’s the first meeting of two ranked teams at TDECU Stadium since the 2015 AAC title game, and Morris called it one of “the games that you dream about playing in.” Dreams are nice. Matchups pay.

Houston stays on schedule like a commuter train. Houston gains enough yardage to stay ahead of the chains on 53 percent of its snaps, a stat the analytics crowd calls success rate, and that’s fourth-best in the country. Oklahoma State’s defense is middle of the pack by that same yardstick. Flip the field and the Cowboys’ offense is good, not great, by efficiency against a Houston defense that’s roughly average. The clearer edge belongs to the home team.

The quarterbacks aren’t close in ball security, either. Conner Weigman has 15 touchdown passes and one interception. Drew Mestemaker has 13 touchdowns and five picks. In a game with this many possessions, that gap matters.

Houston’s run defense breaks OSU’s balance. The Cougars allow 74 rushing yards per game, one of the stingiest marks in the country. Oklahoma State wants balance, with Caleb Hawkins running for about 105 a game. Take that away and Mestemaker is dropping back on obvious passing downs for an offense that converts only 30.8 percent of its third downs. Fritz isn’t sleeping on the scramble, though. Oklahoma State’s quarterback “runs it better than you think,” he warned.

Third down is Houston’s playground. The Cougars lead the nation in third-down conversions, with TeamRankings clocking them at 58.2 percent. Oklahoma State’s defense, meanwhile, spent the week cleaning up after Morris saw “way too many busted assignments” against UCF. Long Houston drives keep Mestemaker on the sideline and put tight end Patrick Overmyer, who caught all four touchdown passes at Kansas State last week, in the middle of every red-zone problem. Morris says “a fast start on the road would be huge.” His team has leaned on second-half fixes all year, and that’s a tougher trick in a loud building at night.

The public loves the Cowboys; the line doesn’t. About 65 percent of Covers consensus picks are on Oklahoma State, yet the spread has moved a full point toward Houston since it opened. ESPN’s Matchup Predictor gives Houston a 74.9 percent chance to win, which implies more separation than this number. SP+ sits right on the market at Houston by 4.4, so this is no model blowout. It’s a matchup call: the better third-down offense, the elite run defense, the cleaner quarterback, and a home night game.

What worries me first is Houston’s track record as chalk: 1-3 against the spread when favored, while Oklahoma State is 4-1 ATS and has hung 40-plus in three straight. Houston’s red-zone defense is leaky, allowing scores on 92.9 percent of trips, and that alone can shrink a Houston win to a field goal.

Mestemaker can also light up a Houston pass defense that gives up 248 yards a game, and in a 60-point night, a backdoor cover is always lurking. Houston has a few skill players listed as questionable, including running back JayShon Ridgle, and Oklahoma State is without guard J. Sexton and tight end O. Hammond. Anything at -7 or higher, and I’m out.

Final score projection: Houston 34, Oklahoma State 27.

The Pick: Houston -4.5
