Auburn at No. 1 Georgia
Saturday, October 17, 2026
3:30 PM ET, Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium, Athens, GA

Georgia is a 20.5-point favorite over Auburn, and the total is 49.5. My play is Under 49.5.

Everybody expects a track meet. Georgia has scored 277 points through six games, the most in program history to start a season, and it has outscored opponents 73-7 in the first quarter. That’s the version of the Bulldogs you’ll see on the pregame show. Look closer and this game has a different shape: an Auburn offense that can’t stay on schedule walking into one of the best defenses in the country, and a Georgia attack missing a big chunk of its skill players running into a rested Auburn defense that’s better than its reputation.

The side doesn’t interest me. The spread has climbed from the -16.5 to -17 range at most books to -20.5, and that’s right where the models land. SP+ and Blue Chip both have Georgia by about three touchdowns once home field is included.

The total is where the value is. It has dipped from the low-to-mid 50s at some books to 49.5, and the team-total market has Auburn stuck around two touchdowns. I still think the full number is a few points too high.

Auburn’s offense lives behind the chains. The Tigers rank 99th in success rate, which tracks how often a play keeps the offense on schedule, and they’re even worse on first and second down. That’s the worst possible profile to bring to Athens, where Georgia’s defense ranks fourth in the country at winning early downs and holds opponents to 3.0 yards a carry.

Byrum Brown is a genuine weapon. He has 105 career touchdowns, the most among active FBS players, and he topped 100 rushing yards at Tennessee. But critics have been saying Auburn is “asking Byrum Brown to do too much,” and they have a point.

Auburn has lost 14 straight road games against ranked opponents dating to 2019, and its games keep landing under. Baylor, Vanderbilt and Tennessee all finished with fewer than 40 combined points. Only the Florida shootout got over.

The Tigers’ defense is the part nobody’s talking about. D.J. Durkin’s group ranks 17th in defensive SP+, allows 3.5 yards a carry, and gets off the field on third down, allowing a conversion just 33.8% of the time. It also had two weeks to get ready, and Alex Golesh spent the bye grinding through tape: “We studied every run scheme, studied it by quarter, studied it by series number.”

Georgia, meanwhile, is limping out of Tuscaloosa. WR Thomas Blackshear is out. RBs Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens and WR Isiah Canion are questionable, and Canion has missed three straight games. The Bulldogs are down three scholarship tailbacks since spring. Kirby Smart summed up the depth chart bluntly: “We have the guys that we have.” The last time this group faced a real defense, it scored 20 points at Alabama.

To be fair to the other side, Auburn is without preseason All-American LB Xavier Atkins. Golesh would only say “We will be without Xavier Atkins this week.” Georgia also ran for 206 yards at Alabama with its backup tailbacks, and sophomore Dwight Phillips Jr. went for 120 in his first career start. Those points matter, and they’re part of why I’m not betting Auburn on the spread. They don’t change the shape of this game, though. Auburn’s best path is to shorten it, protect the ball, and survive the noise. Golesh said as much: “you can’t turn the football over.” Smart expects “an extremely physical game.” Physical games with long, grinding drives don’t usually get to 50.

Here’s the nightmare script for this ticket. Auburn ranks 114th in giveaways, and Georgia has turned 11 takeaways into 62 points this year. Two Auburn turnovers in the first quarter, a runaway lead by halftime, and suddenly the second half turns sloppy and both sides start scoring.

Georgia is also 5-1 to the over, and it cleared a 44.5 total against a decent Oklahoma defense. And if the SEC availability report clears Frazier, Bowens and Canion, this Georgia offense looks a lot more like the one from September. Check the report before you bet.

Final from Athens, as I see it: Georgia 31, Auburn 13. The Dawgs get their 10th straight win in the series, but it comes slowly, and the total never gets close to 49.5.

The Pick: Under 49.5
