Washington Commanders at San Francisco 49ers
Monday, October 19, 2026
8:15 PM ET, Levi’s Stadium (ESPN/ABC)
The San Francisco 49ers are 7.5-point favorites over the Washington Commanders, and the total sits at 50.5. My play is 49ers -7.5.
Dan Quinn opened his Monday press conference by taking the blame. Washington had a shot at a 42-yard field goal to beat the Giants in overtime, couldn’t get the clock stopped in time, and walked away with a 27-27 tie. “Yesterday’s ending was the biggest example, but we’ve got a lot of s— to clean up on from yesterday’s game,” Quinn said. Fair enough. The problem is where the cleanup tour goes next: a cross-country trip to face a 5-0 Kyle Shanahan team with Brock Purdy playing like an MVP candidate.
Washington’s defense turns into a pumpkin after halftime
The Commanders hold up fine early. Then the second half shows up. They’ve allowed 95 second-half points and 55 in the fourth quarter alone, the most in the NFL in both cases, and they haven’t recorded a single fourth-quarter sack this season despite blitzing heavily. TeamRankings grades them 31st in the league in second-half play.
That is a nasty fit against this quarterback. Shanahan said the Seattle comeback turned when “Brock started ripping the ball and just being more aggressive in the fourth.” So Washington has to slow down a closer with a defense that gets worse the longer the game goes. Purdy has 13 touchdown passes against two interceptions, and he’s 2-0 against Washington in his career.

San Francisco’s passing game is printing money
Nobody throws the ball more efficiently than the 49ers. Expected points added measures how much each play helps a team’s scoring chances, and the average San Francisco dropback is worth about four-tenths of a point. That’s the best mark in the league by a wide margin. Washington’s pass defense sits on the wrong side of zero, which means the average throw against it helps the offense. A great passing attack against a leaky pass defense is the whole matchup in one sentence.
The receiving room is thinner than usual. Deebo Samuel is out with a hamstring injury, and Christian Kirk, Demarcus Robinson and Ricky Pearsall are all on IR. It hasn’t slowed anything down. Mike Evans leads the team with 326 receiving yards, George Kittle has a team-high four touchdown catches, and Brandin Cooks is in line for a bigger role. Christian McCaffrey, with five rushing scores, is still the engine.
Third down is where Washington drowns
This is how a 7.5-point spread becomes a comfortable cover. San Francisco converts 51.9 percent of its third downs, best in the NFL. Washington sits 29th at 31.9 percent. One team keeps drives alive. The other punts.
The red zone tells the same story. The 49ers have scored on 87.5 percent of their trips inside the 20, and Washington’s defense has let opponents do it 83.3 percent of the time. An offense that finishes against a defense that can’t hold is how a one-score game becomes a two-score game.
Washington isn’t built to win a shootout here, either. Tackle Laremy Tunsil is on IR, Jayden Daniels is playing in a brace after the left-elbow dislocation that cost him Weeks 3 and 4, and backup Marcus Mariota is doubtful with a knee injury. Meanwhile, San Francisco has allowed only two sacks all season, the fewest in the league.
The market saw this coming. The line opened at San Francisco -5.5 and has climbed to -7.5, with about three-quarters of the spread tickets and most of the money on the Niners. That kind of agreement usually makes me nervous. This time the crowd has the right side.
So how does Washington cover?
Start with the hook. Seven is the biggest key number in football, and a 27-20 Niners win loses this ticket. San Francisco’s only ATS miss this season came exactly that way, a six-point win over Arizona as a 7.5-point favorite.
Nick Bosa (calf) is questionable, and if he sits, the pass rush gets lighter against a Washington line playing without Tunsil. The Commanders are also plus-5 in turnover differential, tied for second in the league, so a couple of takeaways and a short field could keep this inside a touchdown late. Stefon Diggs (hamstring) is questionable too, and as of Thursday neither team has filed an official Week 6 practice report.
I’ll still take the team that gets better as the night goes on. My number is 49ers 31, Commanders 17, with San Francisco pulling away in the fourth quarter while Washington’s defense runs out of answers.
