Los Angeles Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs
Sunday, October 18, 2026
4:25 PM ET, Arrowhead Stadium

Kansas City is an 8.5-point favorite with the total sitting at 42.5. My play is Chiefs -8.5.

The Chargers are 0-5 and somehow it still feels worse than the record. Justin Herbert has five touchdowns and seven interceptions. Los Angeles sits near the bottom of the league in yards per play on offense and bleeding starters by the week. Derwin James, Joe Alt, Donte Jackson, and Quentin Johnston were listed out on the early-week injury report. Ladd McConkey is questionable with a foot issue. You are asking a depleted offense to hang around inside Arrowhead against a rested 4-0 Chiefs team that just spent a week sharpening the knife.

Herbert is spinning his wheels

Los Angeles averages 4.8 yards per play and 16.8 points a game. That is the floor of the NFL. Herbert is completing 59 percent of his throws and getting sacked on better than one of every ten dropbacks. The red-zone touchdown rate sits at 61.5 percent, which would be fine if they ever got there. They do not. Kansas City, by contrast, is chewing up 6.5 yards per play and putting up 29.5 points a night. Patrick Mahomes has nine touchdowns and two picks through four games, and the free-agent addition of Kenneth Walker III has flipped the entire look of this offense.

Walker has 537 rushing yards and four scores on 87 carries, plus two receiving touchdowns. He is averaging 6.2 yards a tote. The Chargers do stuff the run — 3.8 yards allowed per carry — so do not expect Walker to carve them up single-handed. Expect Andy Reid to lean on him anyway, chew clock, and let Mahomes pick his spots against a secondary missing James and Jackson.

Why -8.5 still looks light. The Chargers are 0-4-1 against the spread. They have not covered once. They blew a second-half lead to Denver at home in Week 5 on a day Bo Nix threw for 123 yards. Kansas City already smoked that same Broncos team 31-10 in Week 1. The market opened Chiefs -7.5 and has drifted to -8.5 for a reason: nobody can invent a Chargers path that involves hanging around for a full 60 minutes.

Chiefs defense is allowing 19.3 points a game and just 3.6 yards per rush. Los Angeles cannot run enough to stay out of obvious passing downs, and when Herbert is forced to throw, Kansas City’s front gets to feast. The turnover margin tells the story of these seasons — Chargers at minus-1.0 per game, Chiefs at plus-1.3.

What could bite this number

Reid’s teams are only 8-11 ATS after a bye, including the playoffs. Big favorites coming off rest sometimes sleepwalk through the first half. If Walker gets bottled up early and Mahomes settles for field goals, an ugly 20-13 Chiefs win still loses the ticket. The Chargers’ run defense is legitimately stout, and a short Herbert field goal drive or two could keep this inside a touchdown longer than the spread wants.

Projected score: Chiefs 27, Chargers 13.

The Pick: Chiefs -8.5
