San Francisco 49ers at Atlanta Falcons
Sunday, October 25, 2026
1:00 PM ET, Mercedes-Benz Stadium
San Francisco is a 3-point road favorite over Atlanta (3.5 at some shops), and the total sits at 49.5 to 50.5. My play is 49ers -3.
This line opened at 49ers -5. It’s now a field goal. The undefeated team with the league’s best offense is getting cheaper, and I’m happy to take the discount.
Why the number dropped (and why I don’t care)
The case against San Francisco writes itself. The Niners beat Washington 23-17 on Monday night, then have to fly across the country for a 1 PM Eastern kickoff, which feels like 10 AM to their body clocks. Nick Bosa is banged up, Deebo Samuel and linebacker Garret Wallow are out, and Mike Evans left Monday’s game with Achilles tendinitis. Kyle Shanahan said “hopefully he’ll be able to play” in Atlanta, but nobody’s promising anything.
All fair. But this offense doesn’t run on one guy. San Francisco leads the NFL in EPA per play, the stat that tracks how much each snap moves a team toward points, and it also leads in success rate. Translation: the Niners win more downs than anybody, every week. They convert 51.5% of their third downs (first in the league), score touchdowns on 85% of red-zone trips (also first), and Brock Purdy gets sacked on just 2.8% of dropbacks. Purdy is 6-0, sitting on 14 touchdowns and two interceptions, and he’s the second choice in the MVP market.
Atlanta’s secondary is held together with tape
Caleb Williams just carved this defense up, going 30-of-36 for 305 yards. Top corner A.J. Terrell has been on injured reserve since Week 2, and while Kevin Stefanski said the team is trending toward opening his window, a guy who hasn’t played in more than a month isn’t fixing this overnight. Linebackers Divine Deablo and Kendal Daniels got hurt against Chicago, Daniels was carted off, and corner C.J. Henderson is also questionable. And this defense doesn’t take the ball away. Atlanta’s interception rate is dead last in the league. Purdy can play mistake-free and still pile up points.

Penix has to be perfect, and he hasn’t been
Atlanta throws an interception on 4.2% of its passes, 31st in the league, and its quarterbacks get sacked on 8.7% of dropbacks. Michael Penix Jr. has been the best of the bunch, but he’s still missing throws he should hit. Atlanta’s passing game ranks 29th in efficiency. That’s a tough profile against a 49ers defense that allows just 18.3 points a game and 4.7 yards a play, both top-four marks. The Falcons are also 0-3 at home, straight up and against the spread.
The case against me
Atlanta can run it. The Falcons average 5.1 yards per carry, third in the NFL, and Bijan Robinson is the kind of back who can shorten the game and keep Purdy on the bench. The Niners’ run defense allows a high success rate even though it limits big gains. If Bijan grinds out four-yard runs all day and the travel hangover is real, a three-point line is right there for Atlanta to steal. The last three meetings also went under, so don’t expect a track meet.
Where I land
The market overreacted to a short week and an injury list. The efficiency gap between these teams is massive, and the price is now the cheapest it’s been. Lay the three.
Projected score: 49ers 28, Falcons 20
