Brooklyn Nets at Boston Celtics
Tuesday, October 27, 2026
7:30 PM ET, TD Garden, Boston
The Celtics are 11.5-point favorites over the Nets with a total of 221.5, and my play is the Over 221.5 (-110).
Want to know the worst thing you can do to a defense that can’t close out on shooters? Send it into Boston the night after the Celtics hung 134 on somebody.
Brooklyn is 0-3, and the problem is no mystery. Opponents are posting a 60.7% effective field-goal rate against the Nets, dead last in the league per Basketball Reference. (That number counts a made three as worth more than a made two, so it captures exactly how badly they’re getting torched from deep.) I’m not interested in laying 11.5 with a team on the second night of a back-to-back. I’d rather just bet on the buckets.
Jordi Fernandez is out of answers for his own defense
Fernandez didn’t sugarcoat Sunday’s 136-109 loss to Indiana. “The performance we put up after the first quarter was just unacceptable,” he said, per ClutchPoints. The Pacers shot 58% from the field and 21-of-43 from three.
It isn’t a one-game fluke. Brooklyn plays an aggressive scheme that pressures ball screens and jumps passing lanes. When it works, the Nets force turnovers, about 19.7 a night, fifth-most in the league. When it doesn’t, somebody’s wide open. The Nets are allowing 23.3 wide-open threes per game, the most in the NBA, and opponents are hitting half of them, per ClutchPoints’ Erik Slater. Julius Randle put it bluntly: “We’ve got to be on a string. We haven’t been so far.”
Boston is the last team you want to leave open
The Celtics are making 42.4% of their threes through three games (53-of-125), and only four teams take a bigger share of their shots from deep. Payton Pritchard went 7-of-10 from three against Chicago on Monday and scored 19 in the third quarter alone. Paul George dropped 38 in his Celtics debut. Jayson Tatum scored 36 against the Knicks. That’s a lot of guys who can punish a defense that’s always a step late.

And the back-to-back is softer than it sounds. Monday was a 35-point laugher, so nobody in Boston’s starting five played more than 28 minutes. Tatum, who’s coming off the Achilles tear, said before the season that he can play back-to-backs, “and yes, I want to.”
Brooklyn will score its share, too
This isn’t a total built only on Boston’s offense. The Nets play fast, sixth in pace per Basketball Reference, and they get to the free-throw line at the sixth-best rate in the league. Randle (33 in his Nets debut) and Michael Porter Jr. (28 in Cleveland) can carry a scoring load, and Brooklyn has scored at least 103 in every game. The Nets also cut a 22-point Cavs lead to two in the final seconds on Saturday, so they won’t stop shooting when they fall behind.
Brooklyn’s games are averaging nearly 235 total points, and two of its three have blown past 245. Boston’s are averaging almost 226.
The case against the Over
Boston likes to walk the ball up. The Celtics rank 26th in pace, and fewer possessions is the Under’s best friend. Brooklyn’s offense ranks 24th in efficiency, too, and a dead-legs shooting night from Boston on zero days of rest could leave this sitting at 108-100 in the fourth. A true blowout is another risk if Boston empties its bench early. Boston’s official injury report hadn’t been filed as of early Tuesday morning, so check for any rest news on the back-to-back before you bet. The total ranges from 219.5 to 222.5 across the market. I’d play it up to 224.
